Do you remember this series!?

“NUMB3RS” is a crime drama that originally aired on CBS, 01/23/2005-03/12/2010, becoming a favorite of mine. The idea for the show was generated in the late 1990s when series creators Nicolas Falacci & Cheryl Heuton attended a lecture by Bill Nye, a popular science educator. The show’s premise is similar to author Colin Bruce’s re-imaginings of Sherlock Holmes & the ‘Mathnet’ segment of the children’s TV show “Square 1” (another favorite of mine, previously featured in the 04/04/2017 “TV Tuesday” seen via THIS LINK HERE).
While originally set in the Boston area, the location was changed to Los Angeles to utilize California Institute Of Technology & University of Southern CA for exterior scenes for the fictional California Institute Of Science (CalSci). The Eppes home is a real Craftsman home owned by Davd Raposa & Edward Trosper. The show’s title (with the # “3” in place of the letter “e”) was a source of criticism for some, with several noting the title should have the mathematical symbol for sigma, which looks like an “e”: ∑.
As for the mathematics in every episode, yes, it is real, with several mathematicians providing consultant work for each episode. In the show’s opening sequence, David Krumholtz (who portrays the mathematician brother Charlie Eppes) says: “We all use math every day: to predict weather, to tell time, to handle money. Math is more than formulas or equations; it’s logic, it’s rationality, it’s using your mind to solve the biggest mysteries we know.” The show presents actual mathematics via chalkboards showing mathematically valid equations, somewhat applicable to the situations presented in each plot, & asserted by professional mathematicians. Keith Devlin, Dr Orara (physics consultant) & Dr Gary Lorden (a consultant to the series) wrote the book “The Numbers Behind NUMB3RS: Solving Crime With Mathematics”, which explains some of the mathematical techniques used in actual FBI cases & other law-enforcement departments. The cast includes: Rob Morrow (“Northern Exposure”), David Krumholtz, Judd Hirsch (“Taxi”, “Superior Donuts”), Alimi Ballard, Sabrina Lloyd (“Sports Night”), Peter MacNicol (“Chicago Hope”, “Ally McBeal”, “Veep”), Navi Rawat, Diane Farr, Dylan Bruno, Aya Sumika & Sophina Brown.
