Have you seen this movie!?

Another movie I’ve recently watched with a close friend & really enjoyed: ‘Gremlins’. Released to theaters 06/08/1984 (same day as ‘Ghostbusters’), this comedy horror film was a box office success, receiving critical acclaims despite criticism for its more violent sequences. Those complaints led the movie’s executive producer, Steven Spielberg, to suggest altering the rating system to include a PG-13 option.
Written by Chris Columbus, this motion picture was produced by Michael Finnell & directed by Joe Dante. While the movie itself was produced at a time when combining horror & comedy was increasingly popular, the notion of gremlins was alive well before, having been conceived during World War II when mechanical failures in RAF aircraft were blamed (jokingly, of course) on small monsters. The term “gremlins” also entered popular culture via Roald Dahl’s 1943 book ‘The Gremlins’, based on mischievous creatures; Walt Disney had considered making a movie of it. In addition, an era Bugs Bunny cartoon, “Falling Hare”, has BB battling a gremlin on an airplane.
For this movie, the attempt to use monkeys as the gremlins was decided against after 1 of the monkeys panicked when forced to wear a gremlin head. So, Chris Walas designed the small rubber puppets (some mechanical) to be used as the gremlins; Gizmo (voiced by Howie Mandel) was represented by several puppets, all of which had limitations. A sequel, ‘Gremlins 2: The New Batch’ was released in 1990, while this film is credited with inspiring unrelated films like ‘Critters’, ‘Ghoulies’, ‘Troll’, ‘Hobgoblins’ & ‘Munchies’. This movie’s cast includes: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton (‘The Black Stallion’), Polly Holliday (“Alice”), Frances Lee McCain, Judge Reinhold, Dick Miller, Glynn Turman, Keye Luke, Scott Brady, Corey Feldman, Jonathan Banks, Edward Andrews, Jackie Joseph, Belinda Balaski, Harry Carey Jr, Nicky Katt, Tracy Wells, John Louie & Kenny Davis, with additional voices provided by Frank Welker, Don Steele & Marvin Miller. Cameo appearances included Spielberg, Jim McKrell, Jerry Goldsmith, William Schallert, Chuck Jones & Kenneth Tobey.
