Have you seen this movie!?
What catches your spying-eye radar!?

Yep, you guessed it! Another movie I HAVE seen, recently with a close friend, & really enjoyed. ‘Brokeback Mountain’ is not the “gay cowboy movie” it most-often is labeled; the movie is much more about human connections, 2 souls who fell in love with each other, & has been likened to classic love stories like ‘Romeo & Juliet’. Released to select theaters 12/05/2005, the film posted the highest per-theater gross of any film over the Christmas holiday weekend. A few weeks later, the film played in more theaters 01/06/2006 & even more a week later. The movie’s theatrical run lasted 133 days, becoming Focus Features’ top-grossing production, while ranking 5th among highest-grossing westerns (since 1979) & 8th among highest-grossing romantic dramas (since 1980).

Diana Ossaa & Larry McMurtry wrote the screenplay, adapted from the 1997 short story of the same name by Annie Proulx. Ossana & James Schamus produced the film, directed by Ang Lee. Prior to Lee’s involvement, Gus Van Sant attempted to adapt Proulx’s story, aiming to cast Matt Damon as Ennis & Joaquin Phoenix as Jack, but Damon (who previously worked with Sant in ‘Good Will Hunting’) told Sant he couldn’t follow up his 2 prior movies (a gay film in ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’ & a cowboy film in ‘All The Pretty Horses’) with a gay-cowboy flick.

While set in Wyoming, filming was mostly completed in the Canadian Rockies in southern Alberta for financial reasons. Perhaps finances shouldn’t have been a concern; despite backlash from some groups & several controversies, critics widely praised this movie, which won 71 awards (with 52 additional nominations), including 4 Golden Globe Awards, Producers Guild Of America Awards, Critics’ Choice Movie Awards & 3 Academy Awards. It also has landed in the Top 5 of 21 different critics’ Top 10 lists & last year (2018) became the most-recent film added to the US National Film Registry by the Library Of Congress. The cast includes: Heath Ledger, Jack Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, Randy Quaid, Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, David Harbour, Roberta Maxwell, Peter McRobbie, Kate Mara, Scott Michael Campbell & Graham Beckel.
