Have you seen this movie!?
What catches your spying-eye radar!?
I saw this movie a few months ago with a close friend & enjoyed it. ‘Silence Of The Lambs’ is a psychological horror thriller film, directed by Jonathan Demme from a screenplay written by Ted Tally, adapted from Thomas Harris’ 1988 novel of the same name. This is the 2nd film, behind 1986’s ‘Manhunter’, to feature the character Hannibal Lecter.
Originally, Gene Hackman was picked to direct the movie & star as Crawford, but Hackman withdrew from the project when Tally was about halfway through writing the 1st draft. Also, despite her keen interest in portraying Clarice Starling & winning an Academy Award for 1988’s ‘The Accused’, Jodie Foster was not Demme’s 1st choice; Michelle Pfeiffer was. When Pfeiffer turned down the role, Demme approached Meg Ryan & then Laura Dern, before finally offering it to Foster. As for Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Demme’s 1st choice was Sean Connery, going with Anthony Hopkins after Connery’s decline.
Filming was done between 11/15/1989 & 03/01/1990, primarily around Pittsburgh PA with some scenes in northern WV. The exterior scenes of Buffalo Bill’s home was in Layton PA, while the setting for the Baltimore State Hospital For The Criminally Insane exterior was the Western Center (near Canonsburg PA). In addition, some FBI staff members acted as bit parts because the FBI allowed filming at the FBI Academy (Quantico VA).
Released 02/14/1991, the film grossed $272.7 million worldwide, becoming the 5th-highest grossing film of the year. Critically acclaimed, the film became only the 3rd movie (after ‘It Happened 1 Night’ & ‘1 Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’) to win Academy Awards in all the Top 5 categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress & Best Adapted Screenplay. The Best Picture honor makes this movie the 1st (& still only) film to win in the horror genre. Only 3 other horror movies have been nominated: 1973’s ‘Exorcist’, 1975’s ‘Jaws’ & 2017’s ‘Get Out’. Accordingly, critics, film directors & audiences regularly site this movie as 1 of the greatest & most-influential films of all time. This movie has a sequel (2001’s ‘Hannibal’) & 2 prequels (2002’s ‘Red Dragon’ & 2007’s ‘Hannibal Rising’). ‘SOTL’ cast includes: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Scott Glenn, Ted Levine, Anthony Heald, Brooke Smith, Diane Baker, Kasi Lemmons, Frankie Faison, Tracey Walter, Charles Napier, Danny Darst, Alex Coleman, Dan Butler, Paul Lazar, Ron Vawter, Roger Corman, Chris Isaak & Harry Northup.
