CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES
Spinning the recordsâŠ
âŠ& turning the tables on automotive photos!
This weekâs feature is Southern Pacificâs âZumaâ album & 2 tunes: âMidnight Highwayâ (Side 1) & âTrail Of Tearsâ (Side 2). This weekâs featured interior: a 1977 Monte Carlo (a year older than last weekâs feature car) of which I wanted to see more pictures back in 2007 because of the color combination: brown with tan interior. With the exceptions of the cloth seats, the center console & the aftermarket radio equipment, the interior is the same color interior that was in âmyâ (parentsâ) buckskin tan 1976 MC.
ALBUM:
âZumaâ, 1988
ARTIST:
Southern Pacific

This record (which I own on vinyl) features 10 tunes. Side 1 has 1988âs âMidnight Highwayâ (#14), 1988-9âs âHoney I Dare Youâ (#5), 1988âs âNew Shade Of Blueâ (#2, 2 weeks) & 2 unreleased tunes: âDream Onâ & âThe Invisible Manâ. Side 2 features 5 unreleased songs: âWheels On The Lineâ, âJust Hang Onâ, âAll Is Lostâ, âBail Outâ & âTrail Of Tearsâ.
FEATURE SONG # 1:
âMidnight Highwayâ
While I remember buying this record the instant I saw âNew Shade Of Blueâ (a favorite of mine) on it, this tune (released to radio ~4 months before âNSOBâ) quickly became a favorite as well ⊠&, if you know me, that isnât much of a surprise, right!? Hitting the airwaves 04/09/1988, this single spent 18 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #14. The aforementioned âNSOBâ was the follow-up release, which then peaked at #2 for 2 weeks, sparking a string of 3 straight Top 5 tunes for the band.

FEATURE SONG # 2:
âTrail Of Tearsâ
Only 2 of the 5 un-released Side 2 tunes caught my attention: âAll Is Lostâ & this song, which just moved me. I canât explain it, so I suggest you take the time to listen to this music &, more importantly, the lyrics. Soon after I bought this record, I remember reading a review of this song somewhere; the review was favorable & referenced the actual Trail Of Tears ⊠the forced removal of Native American nations to âIndian Territoryâ. This song had such an impression on me that, when I began planning my 2009 Route 66 road trip, a âmust stopâ for me was a Trail Of Tears monument near Jerome MO, created by Larry Baggett who owned the property on which it sits. Baggett was born 05/08/1925 in TN & died in 2003. From my notes of 09/07/2009: âMonday, 11:45a … I had seen pictures of this tribute to the “Trail of Tears” in several different books in my reading/research before embarking on this Route 66 trip. I’m glad I hunted for this, though I almost missed it … it isn’t as “clear/trimmed” as it looked in the pictures I had seen of it.â
