CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

Spinning the records

& turning the tables on automotive photos!

This week’s feature is Southern Pacific’s ‘Zuma’ album & 2 tunes: “Midnight Highway” (Side 1) & “Trail Of Tears” (Side 2). This week’s featured interior: a 1977 Monte Carlo (a year older than last week’s feature car) of which I wanted to see more pictures back in 2007 because of the color combination: brown with tan interior. With the exceptions of the cloth seats, the center console & the aftermarket radio equipment, the interior is the same color interior that was in “my” (parents’) buckskin tan 1976 MC.

ALBUM:
‘Zuma’, 1988
ARTIST:
Southern Pacific

This record (which I own on vinyl) features 10 tunes. Side 1 has 1988’s “Midnight Highway” (#14), 1988-9’s “Honey I Dare You” (#5), 1988’s “New Shade Of Blue” (#2, 2 weeks) & 2 unreleased tunes: “Dream On” & “The Invisible Man”. Side 2 features 5 unreleased songs: “Wheels On The Line”, “Just Hang On”, “All Is Lost”, “Bail Out” & “Trail Of Tears”.

FEATURE SONG # 1:
“Midnight Highway”
While I remember buying this record the instant I saw “New Shade Of Blue” (a favorite of mine) on it, this tune (released to radio ~4 months before “NSOB”) quickly became a favorite as well
&, if you know me, that isn’t much of a surprise, right!? Hitting the airwaves 04/09/1988, this single spent 18 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #14. The aforementioned “NSOB” was the follow-up release, which then peaked at #2 for 2 weeks, sparking a string of 3 straight Top 5 tunes for the band.

FEATURE SONG # 2:
“Trail Of Tears”
Only 2 of the 5 un-released Side 2 tunes caught my attention: “All Is Lost” & this song, which just moved me. I can’t explain it, so I suggest you take the time to listen to this music &, more importantly, the lyrics. Soon after I bought this record, I remember reading a review of this song somewhere; the review was favorable & referenced the actual Trail Of Tears
the forced removal of Native American nations to “Indian Territory”. This song had such an impression on me that, when I began planning my 2009 Route 66 road trip, a “must stop” for me was a Trail Of Tears monument near Jerome MO, created by Larry Baggett who owned the property on which it sits. Baggett was born 05/08/1925 in TN & died in 2003. From my notes of 09/07/2009: “Monday, 11:45a … I had seen pictures of this tribute to the “Trail of Tears” in several different books in my reading/research before embarking on this Route 66 trip. I’m glad I hunted for this, though I almost missed it … it isn’t as “clear/trimmed” as it looked in the pictures I had seen of it.”
