CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

2 songs from the 1st hour (7p-8p) of my 04/20/1996 college radio show: Ronnie Milsap-Mike Reid’s “Old Folks” & John Anderson’s “When It Comes To You”. Also featured: a vintage trailer-camper (photo by OC,SHer JAY B)

“Old Folks”
Ronnie Milsap & Mike Reid

This tune has been an absolute favorite of mine since I heard it for the 1st time, partly because I often wonder if I’ll be 1 of the lucky ones to become “old folks”. Debuting 03/05/1988, this song spent 21 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #2. At the time, it was Reid’s 1st of 2 straight Top 10s (followed by his solo single 1990-1’s “Walk On Faith”, #1 for 2 weeks) & came near the end of a stellar career for Milsap. While the lyrics are great throughout the song, lines that always gets me: “He believes the world went straight to hell when Brooklyn lost the Dodgers” & “She believes the world is good & kind, but would love warmer weather; & her grandkids are perfect, though sometimes they forget her.”

“When It Comes To You”
John Anderson
[For more info about JA’s hits & history, check out the 04/08/2017 “Smorgasbord Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE, plus the additional links within that post.] This song hit the airwaves 04/18/1992, spent 20 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #3, quickly becoming a favorite of mine. At the time, it was the 2nd of 5 straight Top 10s, book-ended by a pair of chart toppers, 1991-2’s “Straight Tequila Night” & 1993’s “Money In The Bank”. Many consider this stretch to be Anderson’s 2nd or resurgent career, as he’d fallen out of the Top 10 for most of the late 1980s & early 1990s following a handful of smash hits in the early-mid 1980s.
