‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ is a critically-acclaimed drama film that debuted in theaters 09/18/1951, ~3 months before the small screen version of “Dragnet” (featured in this week’s “TV Tuesday” via THIS LINK HERE) debuted & ~2 months after the original version of ‘Angels In The Outfield’ (the remake of which was featured in the 08/03/2017 “Theatre Thursday”, seen via THIS LINK HERE) opened to movie goers. The film version of ‘Streetcar’ is adapted from Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 play of the same name. For the screenplay, Williams worked with Oscar Saul & Elia Kazan (who directed the Broadway production & the black’n’white motion picture). As a result of differing “production codes”, the big screen & play versions had many differences, namely in the number of settings (the play was set entirely at the apartment) & the tone of the themes (the play was considered too controversial for film). The movie cast includes Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, Karl Malden, Peg Hillias, Rudy Bond, Nick Dennis, Mickey Kuhn, Wright King, Edna Thomas, Richard Garrick & Ann Dere, with Brando, Hunter & Malden cast as their original Broadway roles. Leigh was tapped to portray “Blanche” in the movie version over Jessica Tandy (who originated the role on Broadway) due to Leigh’s star power. ‘Streetcar’ has since been featured in many facets of popular culture including songs (i.e. Rod Stewart’s “The Motown Song”), TV series (i.e. “Modern Family”, “Seinfeld”) & movies (i.e. 1973’s ‘Sleeper’).
