“Dragnet” is a television series (based on the radio series of the same name) that originally aired 276 episodes over 8 seasons, 12/16/1951 to 08/23/1959. The name of the series is taken from the police term, a system of coordinated measures for apprehending suspects. Jack Webb created both the radio & TV versions & starred as Sgt Joe Friday in both, though he originally balked at acting on camera, preferring the radio medium. Webb wanted Lloyd Nolan to play the lead role on TV, but the network disagreed, noting how established Webb was with the franchise. Ben Alexander portrayed Office Frank Smith, who became Friday’s permanent partner after a series of partners followed the death of series original regular Barton Yarborough. While Webb utilized the same actors & actresses in the TV version, they sometimes portrayed different characters; the ensemble cast includes: Jack Kruschen, Vic Perrin, Harry Bartell, Peggy Webber, Barney Phillips, Herb Ellis, Carolyn Jones, Clarence Cassell, Ralph Moody, Natalie Masters & Herb Vigran, among others. To make the TV version more appealing, Webb staged each story newsreel-like & enhanced the experience with extremely tight close-ups (rare in those days of the very small screen), location photos & unusual camera angles. The theme, derived from Miklos Rozsa’s score for the 1964 film version of ‘The Killers’, is composed by Walter Schumann & is instantly recognizable, with its 4-note intro.
