CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

Spinning the records

& turning the tables on automotive photos!

This week’s feature is Jo-El Sonnier’s ‘Come On Joe’ album & 2 tunes: “No More 1 More Time” (Side 1) & “Rainin’ In My Heart” (Side 2). This week’s featured interior: a 1978 Monte Carlo I almost “rescued” ~15 years ago; I’d seen it parked along IL RT 47 near the US 24 interchange for a few years before seeing it on Craigslist. I contacted the seller & found out it had been owned by various members of 1 family its whole life & the current owner was a young kid who’d lost his job, had no storage for it & none of his relatives wanted it. Sadly, I’ve no idea what happened to it.

ALBUM:
‘Come On Joe’, 1987
ARTIST:
Jo-El Sonnier
For more about J-ES’ hits & history, see the 06/18/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.
This record (which I own on vinyl) features 9 tunes. Side 1 has 3 un-released songs “Baby Hold On”, “Paid The Price” & “So Long Baby Goodbye”, along with 1988’s “No More 1 More Time” (#7; his best-charting tune) & 1987-8’s “Come On Joe” (#39). Side 2 features 1988-9’s “Rainin’ In My Heart” (#35), the un-released “Louisiana 1927”, 1988’s “Tear-Stained Letter” (#9) & the un-released “I’ve Slipped Her Mind”.

FEATURE SONG # 1:
“No More 1 More Time”
While the un-released “Baby Hold On” & “So Long Baby Goodbye” songs eventually climbed into my list of favorites, I bought this record for 1 song
this tune. Debuting 02/20/1988, this single spent 22 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #7, eventually proving to be his highest-charting single [& it should’ve reached higher marks on the charts, in my opinion]. The lyrics of this song spoke to me from the very 1st time I heard it on the radio, & it has been highly-relevant in my life many times since, including now. While I can’t say my identification rate is 100%, it is quite high, into the 90+%s at least.

FEATURE SONG # 2:
“Rainin’ In My Heart”
Of the songs on Side 2, 1988’s “Tear-Stained Letter” [which I could’ve sworn charted higher than my favorite song on the album considering how much more I heard it on the radio when it was new] is my favorite, but this song also grabbed my attention. Released to radio 11/19/1988, Sonnier’s cover of this tune spent 12 weeks on the country charts & notched at #35 in early 1989. Written by Felice Bryant & Boudleaux Bryant, this song was originally recorded & released by Buddy Holly in 1959, with it notching at #88 on the Billboard charts as the B-side to “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore”. Many artists have covered it since, including Skeeter Davis, Connie Francis, Leo Sayer, Don McLean, Anne Murray, etc.
