CHAPTER 83: WORKING PLAN

About half-way to Cuba MO & the Wagon Wheel from the Meramec Caverns, the brothers stopped in Bourbon MO … because whiskey. Actually, the younger brother wanted to stop just so he could get a picture of himself “in Bourbon”…. The eldest sibling kinda just shook his head, realizing, of course, you only live once & who knows if they’d ever be back this way again.

While the brothers visited Bourbon MO’s Circle Inn Malt Shop, the younger brother re-opened a familiar conversation: “So, since this morning’s broadcast, I’ve been texting back’n’forth with Kyle….”

“You don’t say!?” the eldest half-sarcastically responded. “I noticed you’d been texting a bit & kinda figured it was with Kyle.”

“Yeah….”

“So, what’s on his mind?”

“Well, he sorta is kinda wishing he hadn’t approved this trip.”

“Oh?” This time the eldest was genuinely shocked.

“Yep,” the youngest confirmed. “Seems he is starting to think it isn’t worth the hassle the bombardment of requests we’ve received.”

“While I’d agree the logistics are taking a little fun out of the trip,” the eldest began, “I wouldn’t say it isn’t worth the hassle. Far from it.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, think of it this way. With the success this is obviously having for WSM & the businesses along Route 66, do you honestly think other stations won’t attempt something similar? I mean, think about it. Just because we can’t accommodate everybody doesn’t mean someone else won’t try to cover some places we’ll miss.”

The youngest nodded in agreement, while the eldest continued: “Sure, I’d love for you to broadcast from every place along Route 66, but we both know that just isn’t possible. While you were on the radio this morning, I was more or less keeping tabs on my social media query post. Most of the responses have basically been telling us to figure out our schedule, let them know & they’d accommodate us. I almost posted a reply, but didn’t because I didn’t want to get into a conversation then, plus I wanted more people to comment before I furthered the discussion.”

“Understood,” the youngest interrupted is brother’s train of thought. “Are you going to reply to it later tonight, then?”

“Yep, that’s the plan,” the eldest replied. “Anyway, what I’m getting to is this: as much as I didn’t really want to do this, for fear of being too rigid & missing golden opportunities along the way, maybe you & I need to sit down sometime today or tonight & make a list of all the places we definitely want to stop … & then see how a tentative schedule might look, based on that list of must-stop places. Submit it to Kyle, of course, then post it on social media to get more specific feedback from the people & places … so we have a better idea of how this might all play out. Again, I hate to do that because I wanted to be spontaneous, but maybe this would help in the long run.”

“Yeah, maybe,” the youngest acknowledged. “Except, if we post the list, we need to label them as generic stops, not necessarily our personal must-stops.”

“Agreed. Meantime, let’s get back into the Caprice & mosey on down the road to Cuba so you can get ready to broadcast from the Wagon Wheel. We can talk more about this later tonight after we get settled at the Munger Moss.”

“Fair enough,” the youngest said. “I’ll just text Kyle to let him know we have some thoughts & will advise him sometime soon.”

“Good, I’m sure he’ll appreciate knowing we have some thoughts on this to help make it easy for everyone. I want you to continue doing your thing, of course, but I also want to just take it all in. We never know when who & what we see on this trip will no longer be around.”

The youngest nodded, the brothers got into the tan 1976 Caprice Classic sedan & once again headed west on Route 66….
