CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES
2 songs from my Friday, 04/19/1996, “CD Showcase” (12p-1p) college radio show: Charlie Rich’s “A Very Special Love Song” & Jeanne Pruett’s “Satin Sheets”. Also featured, an abandoned house along Allen Rd, just west of the intersection at Allen’s Corner Restaurant along US Route 20; I took this OC,SH original photo during a drive 11/07/2010. I believe this house has since been torn down finally, as part of the recent reconstruction of the Allen Rd – US Rt 20 – Brier Hill Rd interchange.
#1
“A Very Special Love Song”
Charlie Rich
[For more info about CR’s hits & history, check out the 10/22/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] This song entered the country charts 02/23/1974 & spent 3 weeks at #1 amongst a 14-week run; this single crossed over & reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 & earned Rich the Country Song Grammy. At the time, it was the 3rd of 4 straight chart toppers between late 1973 & mid 1974.
#2
“Satin Sheets”
Jeanne Pruett
Debuting 03/31/1973 (when Cadillacs were really big’n’long!), this song spent 18 weeks on the country charts, 3 of those at #1; the single crossed over & reached #28 on the Billboard Hot 100. Born Norma Jean Bowman in Pell City AL, this singer-songwriter-guitarist released 25 tunes between mid-late 1971 & mid-late 1987; of those, only 5 reached the Top 10 with this smash proving to be her only chart topper. Her other Top 10s: 1973’s “I’m Your Woman” (#8; the follow-up to this cross-over hit), 1979-80’s “Back To Back” (#6), 1980’s “Temporarily Yours” (#5) & 1980’s “It’s Too Late” (#9).
