‘The Birds’ is a horror-thriller motion picture which entered theaters 03/28/1963, ~6 months before “The Fugitive” (featured in this week’s “TV Tuesday” seen via THIS LINK HERE) 1st graced the small screen. Directed by famed Alfred Hitchcock, the film is loosely based on Daphne du Maurier’s 1952 story of the same name. Evan Hunter wrote the screenplay at the direction of Hitchcock, who wanted new characters & a more elaborate plot than the original story, while keeping the concept. Hitchcock’s interest in the story was at least partially sparked by the real-life incident of unexplained dead birds in the town of Capitola CA, 08/18/1961. According to the ‘Santa Cruz Sentinal’, Hitchcock requested news copy to research his newest thriller. No conventional score was used in the movie; instead, sound effects & spares music were featured, with many sounds created on the Mixtur-Trautonium, an electronic instrument developed by Oskar Sala. The cast includes Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette, Veronica Cartwright, Ethel Griffies, Charles McGraw, Lonny Chapman, Doreen Lang, Karl Swenson, Joe Mantell, Ruth McDevitt, Malcolm Atterbury, John McGovern, Richard Deacon, Elizabeth Wilson, Doodles Weaver, William Quinn & (of course) Hitchcock, who made his signature cameo as a man walking dogs (2 of his own Sealyham Terriers, Geoffrey & Stanley) out of the pet shop at the start of the movie.
