CHAPTER 82: JUST STOP
About 45 minutes into his brotherâs WSM broadcast live from the Meramec Caverns in Missouri, the eldest sibling grew restless. He checked his social media post & found it had a bunch of replies already, the majority of which were of the supportive âdo what you need to do & let us know; weâll be happy to have you here no matter the capacityâ nature. & yet, the eldest was finding himself starting to wish his younger brother hadnât come along, & he (the eldest, that is) was uncomfortable with that notion. On the one hand, he was thrilled to share the journey with his brother ⊠& millions of WSM listeners. On the other, this business of radio was creeping into interfering territory with regard to actually enjoying the route, the drive & the people.
The eldest started to type out a reply, but then stopped & deleted what heâd written. He knew that if he posted now, it would launch into further discussion, & he just didnât want to get âstuck thereâ right now. Besides, he wanted to give others a chance to chime in before furthering the discussion queries. So, he looked around him, exchanged a glance & a smile with his brother, & sighed.
With his ears tuned into his brotherâs broadcast, the eldest let his interior mind wander, but it kept coming back to mentally mapping out the rest of the brothersâ Route 66 trip. The eldest kept running different scenarios of where & when theyâd stop for meals & where & when theyâd stop for overnights. The possible combos of such stops along Route 66 are virtually endless, & it drove the eldest crazy. He was very grateful to know the majority of places along the way really didnât care when or for how long, just that they DID stop.
The eldest had 1st heard the âjust stopâ request from the owner of Afton Station, who often wrote in her daily blog about how people just drive by without stopping & miss out on seeing things &, potentially, making new friends, or at the very least, good acquaintances. When he was originally planning his Route 66 trip, she was 1 of the 1st people to respond to his request for assistance. Heâd conversed with her through EM & phone at length about âmust stopâ places as well as the idea of just taking the time to stop, even if for a brief moment. Not every person or every place will always be there for you to see or meet.
That in mind, he took in a deep breath & stood up. He walked up to his brother to mouth to him âIâm going for a walkâ, then, after his younger brother nodded in acknowledgement, the eldest flipped his phone to the WSM app to listen to his brotherâs broadcast through the radio & set out to explore the grounds of the Meramec Caverns. He took pics along the way, & ~1 hour later, ~9:15a, he sat back down near his brotherâs makeshift broadcast area, ready to get back on the road when the morning version of the show ended.
