This record (which I own on vinyl) features 10 tunes. Side A has 1983’s “Islands In The Stream” (duet with Dolly Parton; #1 country, 2 weeks; #1 Billboard Hot 100, 2 weeks), 1984-5’s “Crazy” (#1), 1984’s “Buried Treasure” (#3), 1986-7’s “20 Years Ago” (the reason I bought the record; #2, 2 weeks) & 1988-9’s “I Don’t Call Him Daddy” (#86). Side B features 1987’s “I Prefer The Moonlight” (#2, 2 weeks), 1988’s “The Factory” (#6), the unreleased “She’s Ready For Someone To Love Her”, 1987’s “Make No Mistake, She’s Mine” (duet with Ronnie Milsap; #1; Country Vocal Collaboration Grammy) & 1985-6’s “Morning Desire” (#1).
Those familiar with Kenny Rogers’ mid 1980s releases might recognize a glaring omission from the album; at the time, many thought it should have been included instead of the unreleased track. The single left off this Greatest Hits album: 1986’s “Tomb Of The Unknown Love”, which claimed #1 in the United States & Canada country charts.

FEATURE SONG # 1:
“I Don’t Call Him Daddy”
I’ve mentioned before how much I loved playing lesser-known tunes on my radio shows. That’s not quite the case with this song, but it has an interesting history. Written by Reed Nielson, Kenny Rogers was the 1st artist to record it for his 1987 ‘I Prefer The Moonlight’ album. However, Rogers’ version wasn’t released until a year later in support of this ‘GH’ album. Interest in the single did not build, however, because it wasn’t promoted all that much. 1st hitting the airwaves 09/03/1988, the single only spent 5 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #86 in early 1989. ~4 years later, Doug Supernaw covered this song for his debut album ‘Red & Rio Grande’; issued in late 1993 as the 3rd single from that debut album, it became Supernaw’s 1st (& eventually only) chart topper. [My favorite tune from that Supernaw album is “Reno”.]

FEATURE SONG # 2:
“Make No Mistake, She’s Mine”
This is the only song on Side B that really struck a chord with me; I have it on 2 albums: this & 1 of Ronnie Milsap’s. The single hit the airwaves 06/27/1987, spent 17 weeks on the country charts & claimed #1. It also won the duo the Country Vocal Collaboration Grammy. Written by Kim Carnes, the song was originally a duet featuring Carnes & Barbra Streisand in 1984; that version peaked in 1985 at #8 on the Adult Contemporary & #51 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
