CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

2 songs from the 1st hour (7p-8p) of my 04/13/1996 college radio show: Paula Abdul’s “Opposites Attract” & Lorrie Morgan’s “Dear Me”. Also featured: downtown aerial views of Pittsburgh PA featured in the 1974 Major League Baseball All-Star Game booklet, which my Dad (a huge Pittsburgh Pirates fan) has.

#1
“Opposites Attract”
Paula Abdul
[For more info about PA’s hits & history, check out the 08/24/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] Released 11/28/1989 as the 6th & last single from her debut album, ‘Forever Your Girl’, this fun tune faired well on the charts, 1989-1990. While claiming #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, it also reached #3 on the Hot R&B Singles & #24 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts. Internationally, it reached the top of the charts in Australia & Canada, while notching in the Top 10 in Netherlands (#4), Ireland (#8), New Zealand (#6), Norway (#6) & UK (#2). It also climbed to #18 in Austria, #13 in Germany, #11 in Sweden & #19 in Switzerland. FYI: this single was the 4th BH 100 chart topper from the album, making Abdul only the 4th artist in music history to score 4 #1 tunes from 1 album, following Whitney Houston, George Michael & Michael Jaskson, with Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey & Katy Perry later duplicating the accomplishment. Other familiar Abdul hits, along with “Straight Up”, include: “The Way That You Love Me”, “Forever Your Girl”, “Cold Hearted”, “Rush Rush” & “The Promise Of A New Day”.

#2
“Dear Me”
Lorrie Morgan
[For more info about LM’s hits & history, check out the 08/01/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 03/25/2017 “Smorgasbord Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] This poignant tune hit the airwaves 04/15/1989, spent 22 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #9, becoming her 1st Top 10, after 5 prior releases, including 1988-89’s “Trainwreck Of Emotion” (#20). This song’s popularity increased after her then-husband Keith Whitley died 05/09/1989 of alcohol poisoning. This single sparked a string of 13 straight Top 20 hits, with all but 3 of those reaching the Top 10. Her career faltered in 1994, but then she returned to the top of the charts in 1995 & again in 1997.
