CHAPTER 81: STOP’n’BROADCAST REQUESTS
“So … just how flexible do we want to be on the trip?” the youngest asked.
“Well,” pondered the eldest, “we said we didn’t have to complete this in a specific amount of time, but we also can’t stay on the road indefinitely. Why do you ask?”
It was just after 6:30a the next morning, & the 2 brothers were setting up a makeshift area for the youngest to broadcast his live remote starting at 7a. The morning had dawned sunny & warmish, so the youngest decided to do the broadcast outside, in front of the motel area.
“Kyle just texted me,” the youngest answered. “Apparently, he keeps getting requests for us to make stops to broadcast &/or stay overnight. For instance, I know we decided after the 3-hour broadcast this morning, we’d stop in Springfield MO tonight. However ….”
The youngest paused while placing a few things for his upcoming live remote broadcast, so the eldest completed the thought: “Let me guess, places like The Wagon Wheel & the Munger Moss want us to stop there, too?”
“Yeah,” the youngest confirmed. “How’d you know?”
“I saw some posts this morning on social media.”
“Ah! So, whatdya think?”
“Welp,” contemplated the eldest, “we obviously can’t stop overnight at every place. Heck, The Wagon Wheel is maybe an hour from here. I don’t mind burning daylight in places to visit with people … that’s what Route 66 is about … but, say we leave here around 11a … we’d arrive at our next stop, The Wagon Wheel, in time for lunch. I know you don’t want to broadcast THAT long at each place.”
“Right,” the youngest agreed. “So….”
“So … maybe we plan brief stops at some motels & then continue on down the road & stay at others. Today, for instance, we don’t have to reach Springfield tonight. We could stop at The Wagon Wheel during the lunch hour, you could do an hour-long broadcast there, then we could drive to Devil’s Elbow, maybe arrive there around 3p or so, you could do a brief broadcast there, then we can be on the road & stop for the night at the Munger Moss, arriving in Lebanon between 4 & 5 in the afternoon.”
The eldest paused ever so briefly before continuing his train of thought: “Course, we do that, & instead of staying at the Rest Haven in Springfield MO, we’d arrive there for the next day’s lunch hour, & wind up staying in Joplin for the overnight.”
“Well, I would think the places would be understanding,” the youngest suggested.
“Yes, one would think that,” the eldest agreed. “Tell ya what. Text Kyle back & tell him you’ll do this morning’s broadcast, then we’ll stop at The Wagon Wheel & Devil’s Elbow before landing at the Munger Moss in Lebanon tonight & another broadcast or 2. From there, we’ll see what shakes out.”
“OK.”
“Meantime,” the eldest continued, “I’m going to do a post on social media addressing the various places along the rest of Route 66 & tell them our sudden dilemma about accommodating as many places as possible, but not staying on the road indefinitely.”
“To what end?” the youngest interrupted.
“Well, I’m not completely sure,” the eldest admitted, “but I’m hoping I’ll be able to get an idea of how willing they are to be flexible with our stop schedule, length of stay & your length of broadcast. THEN, we can maybe get a bit better idea of how long we may be on Route 66. I’ll check for responses tonight after we’re settled at the Munger Moss. We don’t have to have the entire trip planned, but if we can get an idea each evening where we will be the next day or 2, that might be best for all involved….”
“Got it,” the youngest said. “Sounds good to me.”
The youngest quickly texted Kyle while the eldest publicized the social media post. Then, the 2 brothers finished setting up the makeshift broadcast area & the youngest went on the air for WSM.
