CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

4 songs from the 2nd hour (8p-9p, double plays) of my 03/30/1996 college radio show: Gary Morris’ “You’re Welcome To Tonight” (with Lynn Anderson), Michael Bolton’s “Steel Bars” & Restless Hearts’ “Wheels” & “Big Dreams In A Small Town”. Also featured: HO scale mini golf course scene on OC,SHer DAVE R’s slot car display.

“You’re Welcome To Tonight”
Gary Morris & Lynn Anderson
[For more about GM’s hits & history, check out the 09/05/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE, the 02/25/2017 “Smorgasbord Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 05/27/2017 “Smorgasbord Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] This is 1 of those songs I can’t explain exactly why it has grabbed me so much. Originally debuting 12/17/1983, this single spent 23 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #9 in early 1984. It was Anderson’s last Top 10, the tail end of a career that included 1970’s “Rose Garden”, a smash hit that claimed #1 for 5 weeks on the country charts, peaked at #3 for 2 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 & eared her the Country Female Vocal Grammy. For Morris, it came in the middle of his career, which later included duets with Crystal Gayle for at least 2 TV shows.

#2
“Steel Bars”
Michael Bolton
[For more about MB’s hits & history, check out the 07/25/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 10/08/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] Technically, this single was released from his ‘Time, Love & Tenderness’ album only in the UK; however, I remember hearing it on the radio here, other than when I played it on my radio shows. I have this album on CD, & this tune is my favorite from the album.

#3
“Wheels”
Restless Heart
[For more about RH’s hits & history, check out the 10/31/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE, the 02/20/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 10/08/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] I can’t think of too many RH songs I don’t like; but I can think of quite a few songs that vie for my favorite of theirs. This is 1 of them, for what should be obvious reasons (I love to road trip). This song debuted 10/31/1987, spent 23 weeks on the country charts & claimed #1 in early 1988. At the time, it was a 4th straight chart topper for this band; that streak ended at 6.

#4
“Big Dreams In A Small Town”
Restless Heart
I may not be in a “small town”, but I sure have “big dreams”
which is why this song caught my radar. Debuting 02/25/1989, this song spent 18 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #3. While it stopped the string of chart toppers at 6, it kept the Top 10 streak alive; this song was the band’s 9th straight Top 10. That string of success continued through 1990’s “Dancy’s Dream” with 12 straight Top 10s.
