‘Cat On A Hot Tin Roof’ debuted in theaters 09/20/1958, 4 days before the premiere of “The Donna Reed Show” featured in this week’s “TV Tuesday” (seen via THIS LINK HERE). It is an adaptation (by Richard Brooks & James Poe) of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by Tennessee Williams. The play version opened on Broadway, 03/24/1955; production on the movie began nearly 3 years later, 03/12/1958. Despite disappointment in the adapted motion picture version from Williams & others, the film was critically acclaimed & generally loved by audiences, launching it to 6 Academy Award nominations. People originally considered for roles include Ben Gazzara (who was in the stage play), Elvis Presley, Floyd Simmons, Lana Turner & Grace Kelly. The cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Burl Ives (in the stage play), Judith Anderson, Jack Carson, Madeleine Sherwood (in the stage play), Larry Gates & Vaughn Taylor. Within a week of the production start, Taylor contracted a virus & by 03/19/1958 was not involved with filming. Canceling an appearance in New York, she stayed home while her husband, Mike Todd, & others flew to NY 03/21/1958; the plane crashed, killing all passengers. This kept Taylor out of filming until 04/14/1958, albeit in thinner & weaker condition.
