CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

2 songs from my Monday, 03/25/1996, “CD Showcase” (12p-1p) college radio show, which was the 1st show back after that year’s spring break: Gary Morris’ “Why Lady Why” & Juice Newton’s “Break It To Me Gently”. Also featured, an HO-scale raceway outbuilding on OC,SHer DAVE R’s slot car track setup.

At the time, it was his 4th straight Top 10, of an eventual streak of 12 in a row, including 4 chart-topping tunes. When this single debuted, many thought it was a remake of Alabama’s 1980 chart topper of the same name; however, this song has a much faster beat to it than Alabama’s single.

#2
“Break It To Me Gently”
Juice Newton

This single debuted 08/28/1982 & spent 19 weeks on the country charts, peaking at #2 for 2 weeks; it crossed over & notched at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while earning her the Country Female Vocal Grammy. Many point to this song as the turning point of her career, switching from pop to country as the dominating genre characteristics of her music. Prior to this tune, she’d had 4 BH 100 Top 10s to 1 country Top 10; after this tune, she had no more pop Top 20 singles, but 7 country Top 10s, including 3 country chart toppers.
