Who remembers these Lincoln Continental sedans!?  This 7th generation (1982-1987) of the venerable nameplate was markably different than its predecessors, or upcoming successors, thanks in part to its bustle-back design, which was 1st in the Seville in 1980 & then in the Imperial for 1981.  Lincoln never fully acknowledged it, but many consider this version of the Continental as the replacement for the Lincoln Versailles, discontinued in early 1980, partly because this Continental was marketed against the Cadillac Seville, though it should not have been … the Seville was front wheel drive & the Continental retained, for the time being, its rear-wheel drive heritage.  Returning in early 1981 as a 1982 model, this Continental was shifted to the midsize segment because Lincoln was left with 2 full-size sedans (Continental & Mark VI) with the Versailles departure.  Remembering lessons with the Versailles badge engineering, Lincoln took great care to differentiate this Continental from its Ford Thunderbird & Mercury Cougar XR7 cousins, all of which were on the then-new Fox platform.
