CHAPTER 79: PHONE CONVERSATION

“So, how’s the trip going?” the middle sibling queried into her cell phone while walking into the business office & closing the door.

“Just fine, sis,” the youngest sibling blurted from the other end of the line.

“Look,” the middle sibling said, sitting down at the desk, “I’m sorry I missed your call before your show. I don’t know how I left my phone here in the office & didn’t have it with me out front.”

“No worries,” the youngest replied. “We figured you were busy with visitors.”

“Well, yes, I was,” the middle sibling confirmed, chuckling slightly. “I probably wouldn’t have answered the phone, anyway.”

“You holding down the fort OK?” came a query from the eldest sibling.

“Sorry, sis, forgot to tell you,” the youngest interjected before the middle sibling could reply, “You are on speaker.”

“That’s fine,” the middle sibling replied. “I kinda figured that! But, yes, the fort is doing just fine & is still standing.”

“Excellent,” the eldest said. “Don’t really have much time to chat, but wanted to call & talk to you a bit.”

“I understand,” the middle said, a bit wistfully. “So … seems people are really enjoying your radio shows & the photos you both are posting on social media.”

“Yes,” the youngest confirmed. “Kyle has told me several times the response is so overwhelming he’s thinking about expanding this.”

“Wait, how would he expand a road trip along Route 66?” the middle sibling asked, somewhat astonished.

“Well, there are other old routes, like the Lincoln Highway, the Dixie Highway … not to mention countless old US routes,” the youngest explained.

“But, we should finish Route 66 first,” the eldest interjected.

“Ha,” the middle sibling said. “That’d be a good idea. Still … I must admit … I kinda like Kyle’s thinking on this. If the response is that great, why not expand?”

“Exactly,” the youngest said.

“So, back to your current Route 66 trip,” the middle sibling redirected the conversation, “where are you guys stopping tonight?”

“The Meramec Caverns,” the eldest replied. “We have reservations at the hotel there.”

“Cool,” the middle sibling said. “How long will it take you to get there?”

“About 3 hours, we expect,” the eldest said. “We plan to take our time, of course, & see some places along the way.”

“& take plenty of pics along the way, I’m sure,” the middle sibling said.

“Of course,” the eldest said, glancing at the time on his cell phone. “Welp, sis, we oughta get going. It’s nearly 3p here. We’ve packed up the radio equipment, but we still need to load it in the car before we can leave Ted Drewes.”

“Sounds good,” the middle sibling said. “I’m glad you 2 boys called. Stay safe & enjoy the drive. I’ll keep tabs on your social media & will listen to ya on WSM.”

“Thanks, sis,” the youngest said. “Take care.”

“&, don’t hesitate to call if you need any help with anything at the business,” the eldest offered. “I know it can be overwhelming at times.”

“Yeah,” the middle sibling agreed, “it is. But, ya know what? I’m gaining a better appreciation for Route 66 … & for how much Dad & Mom loved … & you love … the Mother Road.”
