CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

2 songs from my Monday, 03/11/1996, “CD Showcase” (12p-1p) college radio show: Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Could’ve Been Me” & Ronnie McDowell’s “Watching Girls Go By”. Also featured, a row of various 2017 Pack 100 (NJ) Pinewood Derby cars, ready to race! What catches your spying-eye radar?

“Could’ve Been Me”
Billy Ray Cyrus
The name of this artist evokes memories of his biggest hit, his debut single, 1992’s “Achy Break Heart” which claimed #1 for 5 straight weeks on the country charts, crossed over & reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. His 2nd release, 1992-3’s “Some Gave All” (featured in the 05/25/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE), should have received more accolades, but he didn’t return to the Top 10 until this single (1 of my favorites), which debuted 07/04/1992, spent 20 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #2. This tune was his 2nd Top 10 of an eventual 7 Top 10s of 30 releases between early-mid 1992 & late 2011. This Flatwoods KY-native singer-songwriter-guitarist attended KY’s Georgetown University, then moved to Los Angeles CA in 1984, working as an exotic dancer & car salesman, then forming his backing band, Sly Dog, 2 years later (1986). Through 88 episodes, Cyrus portrayed Dr Clint Cassidy on the TV series “Doc”, which aired on PAX-TV (now ION-TV), 03/11/2001 to 11/28/2004. His other 5 Top 10 tunes: 1992-3’s “She’s Not Crying Anymore” (#6), 1993’s “In The Heart Of A Woman” (#3; a favorite of mine), 1993’s “Somebody New” (#9), 1998-9’s “Busy Man” (#3, 3 weeks) & 2007-8’s “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” (#4, duet with his daughter, Miley). 3 other favorites of mine because they’ve been relevant to me multiple times: 1994’s “Words By Heart” (#12), 1994’s “Storm In The Heartland” (#33) & 1997’s “It’s All The Same To Me” (#19).

#2
“Watching Girls Go By”
Ronnie McDowell
[For more info about RM’s hits (including some of my favorites) & history, check out the 01/09/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] Debuting 11/14/1981 as the follow-up to his 1st chart topper (1981’s “Older Women”), this unique song spent 18 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #4 in early 1982. A few years later, he enjoyed a string of 7 straight Top 10 tunes, mid 1983 to mid 1986.
