“Better than most hotel breakfast options,” Whitley observed while dumping her used paper plate & plastic silverware in the garbage can next to the work-eating table.
“Yeah,” Dillan agreed, “Not bad.”
“So, tell me more,” Whitley, sitting back down in 1 of the table chairs, prompted Dillan.
“Well, not much more to tell you than what I already have,” Dillan said between breakfast bites. “I….”
Dillan, interrupted by the buzzing of his phone, glanced at it on the table next to his plate: “Not sure who this is, but I think it might be Fred, from the newspaper I told you about. Sorry, I should take this….”
Whitley nodded approval & gestured for him to answer the phone.
Dillan scooped up his phone & answered it: “Hello?”
“Yeah, Dillan?” queried a somewhat familiar voice on the other end of the line.
“This is!”
“Good … I’m glad I caught you. Uh, this is Fred … from down at the newspaper…?”
“Yes, hi, Fred! Thought I recognized your voice. I was just telling my wife about our meeting early this morning.”
“Oh?” Fred sounded a bit nervous or worried.
“Yes, I was just telling her how much I appreciate you taking the time to meet & speak with me. I really look forward to finding out more about that pic of my Granddad & that 1950 Cadillac! Since you’re calling, I wonder, did you find something already?”
“Well, sorta,” Fred began, relaxing a bit. “After you left, I got to thinking I may actually have that same clipping. I dug through my personal files, & sure enough, I found a nearly-identical clipping to what you brought in earlier today!”
“Oh, wow, that’s … cool,” Dillan sorta stammered, not sure what to say to such a coincidence.
Sensing Dillan’s doubt, Fred continued: “Oh, you’re welcome to come back in & take a look at it, but I can tell you I’m not much closer to finding the actual publication date. Saturday, March 27, is referenced for something on the back, but I’m not sure what … at least, not yet.”
“Oh, wait…” Dillan said, taking mental note of what Fred had just said. “You mentioned the back! I take it your clipping is from an original copy of the actual paper?”
“Yes, sir,” Fred confirmed.
“Sweet,” Dillan replied. “Ya know, I might drive back to take a look sometime today. My wife & I are scheduled to meet the builder out at Granddad’s, so I’m not sure when….”
“Or, you could stop by tomorrow, if you want,” Fred offered, somewhat interrupting Dillan.
“Yeah, maybe,” Dillan said, “but I kinda want to stop by yet today. What else is on the back of the clipping?”
“Well, part of a cartoon, it seems, as well as what appears to be a heading to TV listings,” Fred described.
“Interesting,” Dillan observed. “Yeah, I kinda want to come back today sometime. Can I call you later when I have a better idea of our schedule?”
“Absolutely,” Fred replied. “&, even if I’m not here, I can always come back to meet you, too. That’s no problem. Say, why is it so important to you to find out more about this picture?”
“Oh,” Dillan nonchalantly said, “I’m just curious is all. The photo makes it seem there is part of Granddad’s life I don’t know about, so I’m just naturally curious.”
“I see,” Fred acknowledged. “Well, for what it’s worth, I don’t think Oscar intentionally hid anything from you.”
Taken aback by Fred’s latest words, Dillan paused before speaking: “I never said he did.”
