CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

Spinning the records

& turning the tables on automotive photos!

This week’s feature is The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s 1989 ‘More Great Dirt’ album & 2 tunes: “Cadillac Ranch” (Side 1) & “Face On The Cutting Room Floor” (Side 2). This week’s featured interior: 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis, a car I almost bought

ALBUM:
‘More Great Dirt’, 1989
ARTIST:
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
[For more about NGDB’s hits & history, see the 09/17/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE, the 11/15/2015 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE, the 08/28/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE & last week’s “Turntable Tuesday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] This record (which I own on vinyl) is subtitled “The Best Of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Vol II” & features 10 great tunes. Side 1 has the unreleased “Cadillac Ranch” (written by Bruce Springsteen), 1988’s “I’ve Been Lookin’” (#2), 1987-8’s “Oh What A Love” (#5), 1988’s “Workin’ Man” (#4) & 1984’s “I Love Only You” (#3, 2 weeks). Side 2 features 1987’s “Fishin’ In The Dark” (#1), 1987’s “Baby’s Got A Hold On Me” (#2), the unreleased “Face On The Cutting Room Floor”, 1988-9’s “Down That Road Tonight” (#6) & 1985-6’s “Home Again In My Heart” (#3).

FEATURE SONG # 1:
“Cadillac Ranch”
Since I can’t decide between the released tunes, I am featuring 2 un-released singles, which I loved to play & showcase on my radio shows. This song, for what should be obvious reasons, quickly became a favorite of mine. Written by Bruce Springsteen for his 1980 album ‘The River’, it was released as a single in Europe, but not in the United States. Even so, it managed to notch at #48 on the Maintream Rock Tracks chart. Other covers include Rick Trevino, Status Quo, Warren Zevon & Lord Horror (with lyrics to the tune of New Order’s “Blue Monday”). Real-life people mentioned in the song include Burt Reynolds, Junior Johnson & James Dean; the name is inspired by the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo TX along Route 66.

FEATURE SONG # 2:
“Face On The Cutting Room Floor”
I can’t say this is a favorite of mine; however, I knew when hosting my radio shows that not everyone will like the songs I like, & some songs I don’t like, others will. Thus, I’m featuring this tune, which was written by the famous Steve Goodman, whose major tunes also include the now-famous “Go Cubs Go” & “City Of New Orleans”.
