Have you seen this movie!?
What catches your spying-eye radar!?

‘Practical Magic’ is a romantic comedy film based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name, about 2 adult sisters using their powers & fighting supernatural forces (sound vaguely familiar!?). Directed by Griffin Dunne, the movie entered theaters 10/16/1998, just over a week after the debut of “Charmed” (featured in this week’s “TV Tuesday”, seen via THIS LINK HERE). While the movie was partially filmed on an artificial set in California, the producers knew an actual house needed to be built. The house was built in Coupeville WA, north of Seattle. The CA set was brought to the house, but it took them over a year to get it “just right”. The house used for exterior shots is on San Juan Valley Road, San Juan Island. A replica was built on the west side of San Juan Island to make it look like it was waterfront property, though the actual house is in the valley. Many of the small town scenes were filmed in downtown Coupeville on Whidbey Island.

At the last minute, Michael Nyman’s musical score was replaced with music by Alan Silvestri. This resulted in the release of 2 soundtracks, of which Stevie Nicks headlined the published advertisements, promoting her songs “If I Ever Did Believe” & a new recording of “Crystal”, both songs featuring Sheryl Crow on back-up vocals. Other prominent artists on the soundtracks include Faith Hill (“This Kiss”), Marvin Gaye (“Got To Give It Up”), Joni Mitchell (“A Case Of You”) & Elvis Presley (“Always On My Mind”).

While the motion picture actually won a Blockbuster Entertainment Award, it failed at the box office & received scathing reviews. The cast includes Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Goran Visnjic, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Aidan Quinn, Caprice Benedetti, Evan Rachel Wood, Alexandra Artrip, Mark Feuerstein, Peter Shaw, Caralyn Kozlowski, Chloe Webb, Lucinda Jenney, Margo Martindale & Martha Gehman.
