ALBUM:
‘20 Years Of Dirt’, 1986
ARTIST:
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
For more about NGDB’s hits & history, see the 09/17/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE , the 11/15/2015 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 08/28/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE. This record (which I own on vinyl) features 11 great tunes. Side 1 has 1971’s “Mr Bojangles” (#9, Billboard Hot 100 chart), unreleased “Ripplin’ Waters”, 1980’s “American Dream” (#58 country, #13 BH 100), 1980’s “Make A Little Magic” (#25 BH 100) & 1986-7’s “Fire In The Sky” (#7, country). Side 2 features 1983’s “Dance Little Jean” (#9, country), 1984’s “Long Hard Road” (#1, country), 1985’s “High Horse” (#2, 2 weeks, country), 1985’s “Modern Day Romance” (#1, country), 1986’s “Partners, Brothers & Friends” (#6) & 1986’s “Stand A Little Rain” (#5).

FEATURE SONG # 1:
“Fire In The Sky”
I didn’t buy this album for any of the songs on Side 1; this is 1 of 2 that speak to me in some way. This tune debuted 11/15/1986, spent 20 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #7. The resounding message in this single: never give up. While I don’t identify with the actual storyline of the lyrics, I certainly understand the “never give up” mantra.

FEATURE SONG # 2:
“Modern Day Romance”
With ~99% certainty, I can type: THIS is the song for which I bought this album. While several of Side 2’s tunes are favorites of mine, this is THE song for me. Why? I’m not sure I can fully explain it; it’s just 1 of those songs that really “hit” me when I was younger
particularly the line: “She never said goodbye
”! Course, in this day & age, the title of this tune means something completely different. This single was released 06/08/1985, spent 21 weeks on the country charts & claimed #1, their 2nd chart topper behind 1984’s “Long Hard Road” & the 4th in an eventual string of 15 straight Top 10 tunes, sparked by their 1st chart topper & including Feature Song #1.
