âI get the feeling my answer to your question isnât going to make the day for either of us,â Fred responded to Mr. Salisberryâs query without exchanging pleasantries.
âSo you have had inquiries about Mr. Kenningtonâs car?â Mr. Salisberry repeated his question into the phone.
âYep,â Fred said, shifting the phone earpiece from his right ear to his left, so he could handle some papers while talking, âjust this morning, in fact.â
âOh?â
âYeah, hang on, I wrote his name down somewhereâŠ,â Fred added, trying to locate a piece of paper on his desk.
âLet me take a guess,â Mr. Salisberry offered, âwas it Dillan?â
Fred froze, stopped looking for the paper heâd written the name on & slowly eased back into his chair: âYes, yes it was! How did youâŠâ
âHe grabbed a photo of Mr. Kenningtonâs 1950 Cadillac from 1 of the walls at the hotel here,â Mr. Salisberry answered Fredâs query before Fred could finish asking. âHe asked some questions about it, but I didnât tell him much.â
âGood,â Fred said. âHe has a clipping of Oscar, who happens to be his grandfather ⊠apparently Dillan & his wife are fixing up Oscarâs old place to live there permanently. Anyway, the clipping he brought into the newspaper office here this morning is a picture of Oscar with Mr. Kenningtonâs 1950 Cadillac. It was 1 of those printed on that damn scrap paper, so I promised him Iâd âlook intoâ it more & see if I could find out what was originally on the other side, along with whatever else details I can scrounge up.â
âWhy did you promise him all that?â Mr. Salisberry asked, slightly concerned.
âOh, you had to be here,â Fred replied. âHe was really interested in finding out more about the photo. I donât think he ever said where he found it, but my guess is, with the work Iâve seen going on at Oscarâs old place, he found it as they were tearing it out. Canât say I blame him wanting to know more about the photo ⊠Oscar really wasnât one for brand new cars ever, & certainly not anything fancy like a Cadillac.â
âI see,â acknowledged Mr. Salisberry. âSo, what now?â
âI donât know,â Fred said. âDid you let him keep the photo from the wall?â
âNo,â Mr. Salisberry replied. âI have it.â
âOK, well,â Fred hesitated, realizing whether or not Mr. Salisberry let Dillan have the photo really had no bearing on Mr. Salisberryâs question of âwhat nowâ. âJust sit tight. I plan to call him here in a bit to tell him I found some info, so maybe Iâll ask him further what the importance is. Who knows? Maybe heâll be satisfied knowing what was on the back of the original clipping. If so, then no harm done.â
âRight,â Mr. Salisberry said, âbut just like you, you had to be here when he was asking about the photo from the wall. I donât think knowing what was on the back of the original clipping he has will appease him enough.â
âYeah,â Fred noted, âfrom my visit with him here, I think youâre rightâŠ.â
âSo, again,â pressed Mr. Salisberry, ânow what!?â
âRight now, nothing,â Fred replied. âGoing forward, no idea ⊠yet.â
âWelp, let me know what happens when you call him. Meantime, I have work to do.â
Mr. Salisberry hung up the phone & looked at the photograph, while Fred hung up his phone, sighed & shook his head, trying to figure out how to approach the next call heâd have to make ⊠to Dillan.
