“Gilmore Girls” is a comedy-drama show created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who also served as co-executive producer with Daniel Palladino (her husband), David S Rosenthal & Gavin Polone. The show debuted Thursday, 10/05/2000, to critical acclaim as a lead-in to the established “Charmed”, ran for 7 seasons & ended 05/15/2007, being 1 of a few series to transition from the original The WB to the new The CW, 09/26/2006. It remained on Thursday nights only that 1st season; it moved to Tuesdays starting with Season 2 & served as lead in to the likes of “Smallville” & “1 Tree Hill”. The show had been a staple for The WB, but was only on The CW for 1 season, partly because the Sherman-Palladinos & The CW could not agree on a contract; Rosenthal effectively took over the show for the last season. Just last year (2016), a 4-part miniseries revival streamed on Netflix.
Part of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s inspiration for the series’ setting (fictional Stars Hollow CT) was a trip she made to Washington Depot CT, where she stayed at the Mayflower Inn. She was so impressed with how close-knit the town seemed to be that she’d written the pilot’s dialogue by the next morning. The series became known for its tagline “Life’s short. Talk fast.”, particularly with fast-paced dialogue, pop culture references (which sparked a “411” of sorts to be produced to explain many of the witticisms spoken) & the filming technique of “walk & talk”. Music was also a huge part of the show, with such artists referenced or their music used as Macy Gray, Metallica, Bangles, XTC, Go-Go’s, Smashing Pumpkins, Ramones, & Carole King (who re-recorded her 1971 tune “Where You Lead” as a duet for the show’s theme song). The cast includes Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Scott Patterson, Melissa McCarthy, Keiko Agena, Yanic Truesdale, Kelly Bishop, Edward Herrmann, Liza Weil, Jared Padalecki, Sean Gunn, Milo Ventimiglia, Chris Eigeman & Matt Czuchry. Over 40 actors played different recurring characters, including Liz Torres, Jackson Douglas, Sally Struthers, Alex Borstein, Ted Rooney, Michael Winters, Dakin Matthews, Teal Redmann, Shelly Cole, Chad Michael Murray, Scott Cohen, Mike Gandolfi, Todd Lowe, John Cabrera, Sebastian Bach, Danny Strong, Michael DeLuise & Ray Wise.
