Without thinking, Dillan grabbed the photo on the wall, removed it & turned around … only to find himself nearly face-to-face with a hotel employee, who he guessed was 1-2 years removed from high school.
“May … I … help you?” the employee said in a voice that sounded younger than she looked.
“Um, yes,” Dillan mustered. “I was hoping someone could tell me about the car in this photo.”
Dillan handed the photo to the employee, who looked it over, while eyeing him.
“What’s so special about this photo that you took off our wall?”
“Well,” Dillan began, pointing to the frame the employee was holding, “I found a photograph of my Granddad who used to live in this area with a car very similar to this, & I’m guessing it’s the same car. Do you know anything about this photo?”
“No, I don’t,” the employee responded. “But, I’ve only been working here a few months. Just moved here. Perhaps we should go see a manager?”
“Oh, hey, I wasn’t going to steal it, I removed it because I wanted to ask a manager about it.”
“Ah, OK,” the employee said. “Well, let’s go see a manager then, shall we?”
“Yes, yes, please,” Dillan said without hesitation, forgetting once again he’d not yet eaten breakfast.
“Is there a problem here?” a male voice bellowed from behind Dillan.
“Mr. Salisberry, this gentleman took this photograph off the wall over there,” the employee dutifully explained, handing the photo to Mr. Salisberry.
“I see,” said Mr. Salisberry, looking over & then cradling the picture frame. “Rachel, you can go now, I’ll handle this from here.”
Rachel nodded & left. Mr. Salisberry turned to Dillan.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t get your name,” Mr Salisberry began, “but I’d like to know what your interest in this photo is.”
“Hi, Mr. Salisberry, I’m Dillan, & I wanted to know if anyone knew something about this photo because I found a photo of my Granddad with that very same car.”
“I don’t doubt that,” Mr. Salisberry said matter-of-factly.
“You don’t?” Dillan said, half surprised.
“Nope,” Mr. Salisberry replied. “But that’s all I can tell you about it, really. The original owner of this hotel owned the car, & that’s really all I know about it.”
“Might anyone here know more?” Dillan asked hopefully, accepting the manager’s word about not knowing more.
“I really don’t think so,” Mr. Salisberry answered. “The car is long gone & the owner has been dead quite a few years now. We don’t really have any employees that’ve been with us that long.”
“I see,” Dillan acknowledged, his stomach suddenly reminding him he hadn’t eaten. “Well, look, I’m sorry for any trouble I caused. I wasn’t going to take it, honestly, I just wanted to talk to someone about it.”
“No harm done,” Mr. Salisberry said with a knowing smile.
“OK, well, I need to get some breakfast & get back to my room.”
“That’s fine, sir.”
With Mr. Salisberry watching him, Dillan turned back to the breakfast options, grabbed some eggs, bacon & a danish, & headed back to the room. While Dillan was settling into a chair to eat his breakfast with Whitley (who was nearly done eating), Mr. Salisberry was placing a call: “Have you had any inquiries about Mr. Kennington’s car?”
