mystery story sequel-continuation

“There it is!” a somewhat excited Evan yelled out, pointing to the 1991 Ford Crown Victoria his Grandpap had been given upon his retirement, while Vern steered his 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis into a spot next to it, with the 1976 Buick sitting within view.

“I see,” Vern acknowledged. “You almost seem excited to see it
.”

“Guess I just wasn’t going to believe it was actually already here until I saw it.”

Vern nodded knowingly, then he & Evan exited Vern’s Mercury. The Sheriff walked out to meet them.

“Seems they had a bit of an ulterior motive to get this car here so soon,” the Sheriff said, skipping the typical pleasantries.

“You don’t say,” Vern said, a smirk forming on his face.

“What did they do to it?” asked a suddenly-worried Evan.

“Nothing,” the Sheriff replied. “It’s what they wanted in return.”

“Let me guess,” Vern offered, his smirk getting a bit larger, “they wanted to take the Buick with them?”

“Bingo,” the Sheriff replied.

“So, since it is clearly still here, how’d you convince them to not take it, Marty?” Vern asked, while he started to walk around the 1991 Ford with Evan.

“Took a call to Captain Wyatt, but he got the job done. Wyatt told them it is needed for an ‘ongoing investigation’, & it couldn’t leave my custody until he released it.”

“Heh, I bet they loved that,” Vern deadpanned.

“Oh, they sure did,” the Sheriff confirmed, smiling slyly. “But, after they talked to Wyatt, they got into their truck & left.”

“Good,” Vern said. “So when is Captain Wyatt having a team come to look it over?”

“He told me a team of his would arrive sometime tomorrow,” the Sheriff answered. “I reminded him of the groundbreaking out at the old airport, & he said he’d make sure they arrive early to mid morning so they could start before I went to that event.”

“Well, good,” Vern said. “Hopefully they do arrive on time.”

“I don’t see anything out of place or anything,” Evan said, backing out of the driver’s side back seat of the 1991 Ford Crown Victoria. While Vern & Marty were talking, Evan had been walking around the car, opening all 4 doors & leaning into the inside of the car at each door. “Though, it does have a set of tires on it now
.”

“That was the 1st thing I noticed when the truck pulled up,” the Sheriff said. “The driver told me they just threw 4 tires on it for easier transporting. So, I’m not sure I’d drive it too far on those tires.”

“Think it’d make it at least to Vern’s?” Evan inquired.

“Maybe,” the Sheriff replied, scratching his chin a bit. “I don’t see why it wouldn’t. I could always give you an escort out there just in case.”

“That’d be great,” Vern interjected, “but we can’t do that until after Ricky’s services. I don’t think we’d have enough time now before the luncheon.”

Evan glanced at his smart phone: “It’s just after 11am now. We’d have time, but we’d have to rush it
& not a good idea since we’re not sure it’ll make it to Vern’s.”

“I bet it will,” the Sheriff commented. “It started up no problem when they removed it from the truck. I’m just not so sure about those tires, which is why I’d follow you to Vern’s.”

“Got it,” Evan said. “Well, that’s good to know it IS seemingly running fine. That’ll help us move it around out at Vern’s as needed.”

“Indeed,” Vern confirmed.

“Wait
I thought you were heading to Tennessee after the groundbreaking tomorrow!?” The Sheriff, turning to Vern, seemed a bit confused.

“Oh, yes, I probably will, Marty, but I figured I’d help Evan look over the car just to make sure all is well before I leave
or, at least as well as we can get it in half a day or so.”

“I see,” the Sheriff replied, turning back to Evan. “Well, I’d start with getting it a fresh set of tires.”

“Yes, sir,” Evan responded.

“Now,” the Sheriff said, glancing at his wristwatch, “it’s nearing 10 after 11. We could go ahead & head for Charlene’s Diner, if you want
.”

“Sounds good to me,” Vern said without hesitation. “You want to ride with me & Evan, Marty, or are you going to drive yourself?”

“Probably should take my squad car,” the Sheriff said. “But, let’s get the Crown Vic & the Buick into the police garage
just in case. Then, we can head to the luncheon.”
