(inspired by my 09/2009 Route 66 road trip)

CHAPTER 76: TIMING IS EVERYTHING

The youngest sibling wrapped up his live remote broadcast just seconds before the clock struck 10a US central. WSM broadcasts news at the top of every hour, like clockwork at the strike of the new hour, a ritual that often frustrated the youngest because, while he was good at hitting the post, he often didn’t quite manage to get the timing right at the top of the hour, something that endeared him to listeners, but frustrated his bosses, especially Kyle.

But, for whatever reason, during THIS broadcast, the youngest nailed the timing, just about to the second. His end was so precisely on time that it caught his older brother’s attention, as well as the attention of the shopkeeper & the brothers’ sister, who were both listening at the family business … & the attention of many listeners. It was so surprising, the newscaster who took over the broadcast at the top of the hour & was often paired with the youngest sibling, quipped on air: “& now the news … on time this time!”

The youngest’s enjoyment of that accomplishment was short-lived, since he had to pack up quickly so he & his older brother could get back on the road. The brothers packed up & said goodbye to Rich & the Rabbits, & were on the road in the youngest’s tan 1976 Caprice Classic sedan just after 10:15a, headed for Edwardsville, planning to arrive ~11a.

Back at the family business, after the “shock” of the youngest sibling nailing the top-of-the-hour timing, the shopkeeper decided to go drive the oldest’s maroon 1976 Caprice Classic sedan as he’d promised. So, he said goodbye to the middle sibling (promising to return in an hour or so to continue helping her greet visitors), got in his pickup & headed to the eldest’s house, which he’d been checking every day since the brothers left town for their Route 66 trip. Planning to get the maroon Caprice started & then go pick up his wife at their house to go for a drive, the shopkeeper pulled his pickup into the driveway, went inside the house, grabbed the Caprice keys & headed for the garage….
