Dillan arrived back at the hotel room to find Whitley up & munching on selections from the hotel’s hot breakfast bar. He’d been in such a rush to get to the newspaper office, he’d forgotten about breakfast. So, after kissing his wife briefly, he walked back to the hotel’s main lobby to grab some options for himself.
He arrived in the lobby the proverbial “moment too late”; a family of 6 was in front of him in line. While he waited patiently for his turn, he observed the family of 6: the husband, a dude he guestimated to be over 6’ tall; the wife, a lady who seemed to be dwarfed by her husband; & 4 kids, none of which he attempted to age out, but it seemed to him they were pretty evenly spaced, between roughly 5 years of age & 15, maybe 19. They seemed to be on vacation, as all of them were either in sweat pants or jeans, & all of them, with the exception of the youngest child, in very good spirits. The youngest child was wailing about something, & the mother was desperately trying to calm the tyke, seemingly to no avail.
But, then, the youngest child caught Dillan observing them, & staring somewhat at Dillan, suddenly stopped crying & smiled. The mother, somewhat startled, looked from her youngest’s eyes to Dillan’s.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, sir, I hope we’re not disturbing you,” she said to Dillan, who almost didn’t realize she was speaking to him.
After a brief silence, Dillan suddenly realized she was talking to him & responded: “Oh, no worries, ma’am. Not a bother. Sometimes kids have a mind of their own.”
Dillan bent down & smiled at the young child. “You just want to eat so you can go have some fun, right?”
The child nodded.
“See,” Dillan said standing back up, “it’s all good.”
The lady smiled & nodded her thanks. Dillan returned the smile with a grin of his own, & the lady turned her youngest back towards the food waiting on the counter tables. As Dillan watched the lady help her youngest fill his plate, a photo on the wall just above the enticing pastries caught the corner of Dillan’s eye. He cocked his head slightly & leaned in a bit for a closer look: it was a photo of a 1950 Cadillac Limo, much like the 1 in the photo of his Granddad.
