“Say what?! It’s already there?! But, it’s only….” Vern’s voice cut off.
“What’s going on, Vern?” Evan asked rather emphatically.
Vern waved off Evan, while he tried to listen to the person on the other end of the phone.
“But I thought they told you it wasn’t leaving until around 10a? Are you sure it’s McMillan’s old car?”
Evan froze & sat down at Vern’s kitchen table. Vern was standing next to the sink & window, a cleaning solution in his right hand & his phone, near his ear, in his left hand.
“OK, well, as long as you’re sure it’s the correct car, Marty,” Vern said into his phone. “Evan & I will be on our way momentarily. We just got started getting ready to polish my 1975 Caprice Classic convertible, after we made plans for a huge lunch at Charlene’s before Ricky’s services this afternoon. We thought we had at least another hour, hour & a half. It’s only 10:30!”
“Yep, no problem,” Vern continued into his phone. “We’ll be there soon. & yes, if you are able, we’d love to have you at lunch at Charlene’s. Far as I know, Tyler, Tom, Phil, Kyle & Ashley & the kids, Mabel & Old Lady Yannich are planning to be there. … Mmmmhmm, that’s right.”
Evan unfroze, got up from the kitchen chair & offered to take the cleaning solution from Vern & put it away. Vern handed Evan the bottle while speaking into his phone again: “OK, sounds good. Oh hey, what about the Buick? … Ah, OK. … So, it’s not going anywhere until Captain Wyatt can get a team there, good. … Did Wyatt say why the Crown Vic arrived earlier than he said it would? … Hmmmm, well, I guess it’s good they wanted to rectify their mistake as quickly as possible … still, Marty, this whole thing has just been … odd. … Well, anyway, we’ll see you in a bit.”
“So, Grandpap’s car is really already there?” asked a still-shell-shocked Evan, returning to the kitchen after putting the bottle back in the utility room.
“Yep, it is,” confirmed Vern, shutting off his phone & turning to face Evan.
“Well, then, let’s go, I guess,” Evan said.
“I guess so,” Vern replied. “I’ll just put the Caprice back in the garage, & we’ll take the Mercury. Sheriff said he’d try to be at the luncheon, too, & now, since the car is early, said he’d call everyone to have them get to Charlene’s sooner so we can relax & enjoy the meal a bit more than feeling rushed to eat before Ricky’s services.”
“Cool deal,” Evan said. “So, what time did Grandpap’s car leave the yard? I heard you say something about them wanting to get the mistake corrected promptly?”
“Mmhmm, yep,” confirmed Vern. “That’s what Captain Wyatt was told, anyway. Marty said the documentation to leave was time-stamped 8:40a.”
Evan shook his head: “Well, as you said, this whole situation has been weird, so why not the car’s return, too?”
“Exactly,” Vern chuckled, then continued after a pause: “OK, well, let’s get going. I’ll go put the Caprice in the garage & we’ll be off, back to the Sheriff’s Office.”
