Carl enters Mack’s room as Mack wakes. Carls asks how Mack is doing while checking Mack’s vitals. Mack says he feels OK, but tired. Carl tells him he should be able to go home soon. This pleases Mack since he realizes he will have more time-opportunity to pursue bringing Laura back. Carl suggests to Mack that bringing Laura back would not necessarily prove he (Mack) is Jake’s grandfather. Mack disagrees & is somewhat irritated Carl would suggest that after he (Carl) offered to help bring Laura back. Carl is surprised Mack thought he (Carl) offered to help. Mack & Carl begin to argue-banter about this, but Mack puts a stop to the bickering by telling Carl he doesn’t care whether or not Carl was going to help because Cathy has told him she would help….
At the TV station, Amy & Christine’s conversation is interrupted when a technician tells Amy about the major collision. Amy instinctively instructs a crew from the newsroom to go to the scene.
Jackie ignores Tammy’s veiled threat, further angering Tammy. Julia, Alicia & the guard arrive outside the door to Jackie’s hospital room. Tammy further threatens Jackie: she’ll start talking right now if she (Jackie) does not acknowledge her (Tammy). Overhearing Tammy’s last statement, Julia bounds into the room (with Alicia & the guard right behind her), just as Jackie moves to slap Tammy. Sensing a slap forthcoming, Tammy moves to grab-shake Jackie, but Julia yanks Tammy away from her mother (Jackie) … & Jackie accidentally slaps Julia instead. Tammy & Jackie continue to “mouth off” to each other, with Alicia simply watching & Julia somewhat dumbfounded. The guard finally breaks it up between Tammy & Jackie, throwing Tammy out of the room. Tammy yells to Jackie: “This isn’t over!” … a thought Jackie returns, equally loud. Tammy then heads for Olivia’s room. Meanwhile, Jackie suddenly realizes Alicia is there, & all of her anger & tenseness simply vanishes. She reaches out for Alicia to give her a huge hug. Alicia & Jackie embrace, while Julia asks Jackie what happened between her (Jackie) & Tammy. Feeling no more hurt, Jackie waves off the incident with Tammy as “nerves” over her surgery & Olivia’s coma. Julia quickly drops the subject. Alicia steps back from her mother; Jackie expresses disbelief that she (Alicia) is out of jail. Jackie looks at Julia & realizes something else is wrong. Julia explains Richie is no longer with her because he is now pursuing Erika. Jackie can’t believe that either, & reaffirms her belief: Julia had nothing to do with Laura’s disappearance. However, Alicia appears to not hold the same belief, getting a “yeah, right” look on her face.
Wendleton answers the phone & becomes rather mysterious. He gets rather pleased at what he is hearing. Wendleton pauses, turns to Desmond & Virginia, & tells them the person on the phone has something to tell them.
Cathy & Erika are interrupted when Cathy is paged over the hospital public address system. Cathy goes to the nearest phone in the hallway outside the chapel; Erika chooses to wait in the chapel, but then senses she needs to be with Cathy at the phone. She walks into the hallway & finds Cathy standing at the phone (receiver in hand) with a startling blank expression on her face. Erika asks what is wrong; Cathy slowly hangs up the phone & turns to Erika, simply saying: “Michael is dead”. Erika’s expression turns from inquisitive concern to sheer horror.
As pictures of the collision come into the TV newsroom, Amy & Christine are horrified to see the damage to the vehicles involved. Amy is the 1st to recognize Matthew’s car & becomes hysterical.
While Wendleton begins to hand his phone to Desmond, Virginia-Desmond’s home phone rings. Virginia quickly excuses herself to go answer it, leaving Wendleton a bit frustrated at the interruption. Desmond takes the phone from Wendleton’s grasp & quickly hears Wendleton’s hired help saying the boys are in his “custody”. At the exact same moment, Virginia is learning of Matthew’s death … & gives a blood-curdling scream, which prompts Desmond to drop Wendleton’s phone to the floor. Virginia races into Desmond’s office & screams: “Matthew is DEAD!” Desmond becomes incensed, erroneously believing Wendleton is also responsible for Matthew’s untimely demise, & moves to strangle Wendleton, screaming about Wendleton’s nerve to kidnap the boys & murder Matthew.
