CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

3 songs from my Monday, 02/19/1996, “CD Showcase” (12p-1p) college radio show: Alan Jackson’s “Don’t Rock The Jukebox”, Juice Newton’s “Shot Full Of Love” & Gary Morris’ “Headed For A Heartache”. Also featured, a pair of emblem collages! What catches your spying-eye radar?

#1
“Don’t Rock The Jukebox”
Alan Jackson
[For more info about AJ’s hits & history, check out the 07/15/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 11/07/2015 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] During a summer 1991 family vacation to California, we experienced a minor earthquake while preparing to leave the home of family friends 1 morning. No damage or injuries, just rattled nerves for those of us who’d never experienced that before. When we left their house, we turned on the car radio to a local station, & the DJ played this song, referencing the morning’s trembler
. This single debuted 05/18/1991 & spent 20 weeks on the country charts, 3 of those at #1. It was his 2nd straight chart topper (behind 1991’s “I’d Love You All Over Again” (2 weeks) & 5th straight Top 10. Other familiar favorites include 1990’s “Here In The Real World” (#3, 2 weeks), 1993’s “Mercury Blues” (#2), 1994’s “Summertime Blues” (#1, 3 weeks), 2000’s “It Must Be Love” (#1), 2001’s “Where Were You” (#1, 5 weeks; CMA Single Of The Year, CMA Song Of The Year, Country Song Grammy), 2002’s “Drive” (#1, 4 weeks), 2003’s “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere” (#1, 8 weeks; duet with Jimmy Buffett) & 2003-4’s “Remember When” (#1, 2 weeks).

#2
“Shot Full Of Love”
Juice Newton
[For more info about JN’s hits & history, check out the 05/07/2015 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 06/15/2016 “Wednesday Wrap” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] Newton never released this song as a single; however, I have it on 1 of her CDs I own. I remember the 1st time I heard it after I bought that CD, I was dumbfounded. I remembered the song from my childhood, but could not remember who sang it. I also remembered having a brief snippet of the chorus on a tape. So, I dug out that tape & listened to it over & over again, but could not figure out who sang it. Years later, when I got my 1st edition of a Joel Whitburn book, I looked it up
& was surprised to discover it had been released by 3 artists: Randy Parton (#30, 1981), The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (#19, 1983) & McCarters (#73, 1990). The version I had & immediately remembered distinctly: TNGDB’s 1983 tune. [You can hear the version I remember from my childhood via THIS LINK HERE; that was TNGDB’s 1st Top 20 on the country charts & lead to a string of success through the mid-late 1980s.] I wish this song had faired better on the charts.

“Headed For A Heartache”
Gary Morris
[For more info about GM’s hits & history, check out the 09/05/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] During this radio show, this was the 1st of 2 Morris songs I played; the 2nd being the song featured 09/05/2015. This Fort Worth TX-native singer-songwriter-guitarist also acted in Broadway’s ‘Les Miserables’ & ‘La Boheme’, along with TV’s “The Colbys”. This song hit the airwaves 10/17/1981, spent 17 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #8; it was his 1st Top 10 tune (after 2 prior releases managed only #40). Other familiar favorites include: 1982’s “Don’t Look Back” (#15), 1983’s “The Love She Found In Me” (#5), 1983’s “The Wind Beneath My Wings” (#4; CMA Song Of The Year), 1983-4’s “Why Lady Why” (#4), 1983-4’s “You’re Welcome To Tonight” (#9; duet with Lynn Anderson), 1984-5’s “Baby Bye Bye” (#1), 1985’s “I’ll Never Stop Loving You” (#1) & 1986’s “100% Chance Of Rain” (#1).
