CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

3 songs from the 3rd hour (9p-10p) of my 02/17/1996 college radio show: Johnny Lee’s “Looking For Love”, Kathy Mattea’s “Love At The 5 & Dime” & Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. Also featured: a row of Saturns in front of a neat building at the 10/30/2016 Extinct Show at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum, Brookline MA

#1
“Looking For Love”
Johnny Lee
[For more info about Lee’s hits & history, check out the 04/30/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] For reasons still unbeknownst to me, this song was an absolute childhood favorite of mine. I remember singing it dang near as loud as I could every time I heard it on the radio (back then, we didn’t have “instant” music online
shocking, I know!). These days, I’m STILL “looking for love”
. This tune hit the airwaves 07/19/1980 & spent 14 weeks on the country charts, 3 of those at #1. From the movie ‘Urban Cowboy’ (starring John Travolta), this song crossed over & reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This was Lee’s breakout hit, his 1st Top 10 & 1st chart topper.

#2
“Love At The 5 & Dime”
Kathy Mattea
[For more info about Mattea’s hits & history, check out the 08/28/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 09/24/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] As with Lee’s hit above, this Mattea tune was her breakout release. Debuting 04/12/1986, this song spent 22 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #3. While none of Mattea’s prior 7 releases had cracked the Top 20, this song sparked a string of 15 straight Top 10 tunes, including 4 chart toppers. I don’t know what it is, but every time I hear this song, I get a bit nostalgic
.

#3
“Coal Miner’s Daughter”
Loretta Lynn
I tend to think of this tune as the ultimate career-defining smash. This song debuted 10/31/1970, spent 15 weeks on the country charts & claimed #1. While it technically crossed over, it only reached #83 on the Billboard Hot 100. Meantime, it won the Hall Of Fame Grammy award. This Butcher Holler KY-native singer-songwriter-guitarist is the sister of Crystal Gayle & Peggy Sue, & a distant cousin of Patty Loveless. Her autobiography (same name as this song) spawned a movie (starring Sissy Spacek as Lynn) of the same title. Lynn’s career spanned mid 1960 to mid 1988, with 3 later-life tunes in 1993-4 (“Silver Threads & Golden Needles” with Dolly Parton & Tammy Wynette), 2000 & 2010 (a new version of this song with Sheryl Crow & Miranda Lambert). She notched 16 chart toppers & 35 additional Top 10s, including these familiar favorites: 1966’s “You Ain’t Woman Enough” (#2, 2 weeks), 1966-7’s “Don’t Come Home A’Drinkin’” (#1), 1971-2’s “One’s On The Way” (#1, 2 weeks) & 1973’s “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” (#1; 1 of several duets with Conway Twitty).
