‘Speed’ is an action thriller film that debuted in theaters 06/10/1994. Graham Yost wrote the script, after seeing the movie ‘Runaway Train’, about which his father, Elwy (a Canadian TV host), had told him. Graham went to see the movie, mistakenly believing the train’s runaway situation was caused by a bomb. Upon leaving the screening, Graham decided it would be better if a bomb was on board. Upon finishing a script, Graham took his idea to Paramount Pictures, which expressed interest & green-lighted production. Jan de Bont was hired as the director, his directorial debut. Filming was done on location in Los Angeles, between 09/07/1993 & 12/23/1993, with highway scenes done at an interchange of I-105 & I-110 (now known as the Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange) not officially open at that time, similar to how the TV series “CHiPs” [previously featured as the 12/15/2015 “Tuesday TV” entry via THIS LINK HERE] had been filmed. During production, River Phoenix died; De Bont altered the schedule to accommodate the cast, particularly lead Keanu Reeves. 11 GM New Look buses & 3 Grumman 870 buses were used: 2 were blown up, 1 was used for high-speed scenes, 1 had no front end for interior images & 1 was used only for “under bus” camera angles. At least 2 others were used in the bus jump scene, with 1 missing the jump & being damaged. Final scenes were filmed at the Mojave Airport, which subbed as LAX. The LACMTA Metro Red Line shots were done using a 1/18 scale model. Critically acclaimed universally, the movie proved to be a smash at the box office, debuting at #1. In 1995, the motion picture won 2 Academy Awards: Best Sound Editing & Best Sound Mixing. Cast includes: Reeves, Dennis Hopper, Sandra Bullock, Joe Morton, Jeff Daniels, Alan Ruck, Glenn Plummer, Richard Lineback, Beth Grant, Hawthorne James, Richard Schiff, Carlos Carrasco, David Kriegel, Natsuko Ohama, Daniel Villarreal & Patrick Fischler.
