mystery story sequel-continuation

“You know, Evan, you didn’t have to walk out of Marty’s Sheriff’s Office in such a huff,” began Vern, settling into his 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis & starting the car.

“I didn’t mean to,” offered Evan, already sitting in the passenger seat.

“OK,” replied Vern, putting the car into gear & steering out of the parking lot. “I believe you. But
.”

“I’m just frustrated by this whole thing,” interrupted Evan. “I didn’t want Grandpap’s car back again, then it seemed like it was meant to be, & now
well, I don’t know. It’s very disconcerting that the car sent in its place is owned by a Schuster. I mean, what are the chances? That can’t be coincidence, can it?”

Vern glanced quickly at Evan, who had turned to look at Vern. Turning his eyes back to the road, Vern replied: “I don’t know, Evan. I know Marty is going to look into it further
.”

“
Which might open up a whole new can of worms,” Evan again interrupted. “I mean
.”

“Did you ever stop to think that this could be a GOOD thing?” asked Vern, still looking at the road ahead.

After a slight pause, Evan answered: “Well, no.”

“Then start considering that possibility. For all we know, this Mrs. Schuster is someone connected to David Schuster who we can still help
.”

“Wait,” Evan interjected. “Are you trying to figure out ways to stay here & not go see your Nephew?”

“No
.” Vern said slowly. “Why did you even ask that?”

“Well, it just seems you stuck around here to help people, & maybe it’s time you help yourself. Ya know, after Ricky’s services & after the ground breaking, just GO. Let me, Sheriff & everybody else worry about the Mrs. Schuster
if she even is family to David Schuster. I don’t mean any disrespect, & I’m not trying to run you out of Wyoming
goodness knows how I would’ve handled the situation with Grandpap’s car if you weren’t here
but, all of us in this town know how much you love to road trip, & you’ve been promising your Nephew in Nashville, Tennessee, a visit for a while now. Time to just
 DO IT.”

Vern nodded, keeping his eyes on the road.

“I shouldn’t have said anything
.”

“No, no, Evan, it’s OK. I appreciate you speaking up. You’re going to need that boldness as you grow older. You haven’t said anything that hasn’t been eluded or mentioned to me in some way, shape or form already lately
or, for that matter, that I haven’t thought about.”

Evan let Vern’s last words hang in the air for a bit, partly because he didn’t really know how to respond, except with a nod of his head. Then, after a moment of somewhat awkward silence, Evan offered: “Look, you don’t have to take me home, we can just wait at your place so you don’t have to do all that extra running around.”

“You sure, Evan?”

“Absolutely.”

“OK, fair enough. My place it is! Maybe, while we’re waiting for the Sheriff to call, we can discuss how we’re going to get McMillan’s, er YOUR, 1991 Ford Crown Victoria back to ‘good’?”

“We?”

“Well, yeah
 you know what I mean.”

“Uh, huh,” Evan cracked a smile.

“Or
we could polish up my 1975 Caprice convertible, if you’d rather
.”

“Uh, huhhh
.” Evan’s smile grew a bit wider.

“Or
we could see if anyone wants to join us at Charlene’s for lunch before Ricky’s services. Perhaps Tyler, Tom, Phil
maybe Kyle & Ashley & the kids
heck, perhaps even Mabel & Old Lady Yannich?”

“Hmmm, maybe!”

Out of the corner of his eye, Vern caught Evan’s widening grin. Vern sorta smiled, chuckled inside & steered his car towards his home.
