CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

2 songs from the 2nd hour (8p-9p; double plays) of my 02/17/1996 college radio show: Kenny Rogers’ “Scarlet Fever” & Kenny Rogers-Dolly Partons’ “Islands In The Stream”. Also featured: a train, tracks & the moon

#1
“Scarlet Fever”
Kenny Rogers
[For Rogers’ history & hits, check out the 01/27/2016 “Wednesday Wrap” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 09/24/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] This is 1 of those songs I remember from my childhood, particularly because it was on a record my grandmother had … which I now have. I’m not really sure what drew me to this song as a kid, considering the topic, but I think it was the sadness of Scarlett leaving. Now, as an adult, I know what Scarlett is … & yet, that sadness of her not being there anymore is deeper … because I wonder how many people are doing these days. For the record (see what I did there?), this song debuted 07/30/1983, spent 18 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #5! It crossed over (barely), reaching #94 on the Billboard Hot 100.

#2
“Islands In The Stream”
Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton
[For Parton’s history & hits, check out the 11/26/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 01/07/2017 “Smorgasbord Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE.] I don’t remember whether I knew it or not during this 1996 broadcast, but these 2 songs I played back-to-back that evening (“Scarlet Fever” & “Islands In The Stream”) were back-to-back releases in 1983 for Rogers. This tune hit the airwaves 09/03/1983 & spent 23 weeks on the country charts, 2 of those at #1. Written by Barry, Maurice & Robin Gibb (BeeGees), this song crossed over & claimed #1 for 2 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, too.
