ALBUM:
‘Greatest Hits Volume 2’
ARTIST:
John Conlee
For more about Conlee’s hits & history check the 07/06/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE, the 07/23/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 01/21/2017 “Smorgasbord Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE. Originally released in late 1985, this record (which I own on vinyl), has many familiar tunes, including my favorites 1984-5’s “Years After You” (#2, 2 weeks) & 1985-6’s “(The) Old School” (#5).

FEATURE SONG #1:
“In My Eyes”
This song debuted 10/15/1983, spent 23 weeks on the country charts & claimed #1 in early 1984. At the time, it was the 3rd chart topper in a string of 4 straight, including 1983’s “Common Man”, FEATURE SONG #2 below & 1984’s “As Long As I’m Rockin’ With You”. While I was in the midst of 4th grade when this song was popular, it captured my attention then & a few different times in my life. It is 1 that I’m sure most of us can relate to in some way, shape or form.

FEATURE SONG #2:
“I’m Only In It For The Love”
This song preceded FEATURE SONG #1 on the charts, but is the 5th of 5 songs on Side 1 of this record. The tune originally hit the airwaves 06/25/1983, spent 20 weeks on the charts & became the 2nd tune in the string of 4 straight chart toppers mentioned above. I don’t have any specific memories of this song, but it is a catchy tune that I’m betting many of you can relate to in some way, shape or form … & … it was written by Deborah Allen, Kix Brooks & Rafe Van Hoy. You might recognize 2 of those names: Deborah Allen (i.e. “Baby I Lied”) & Kix Brooks (i.e. Brooks & Dunn).

FEATURE SONG #3:
“Working Man”
Debuting 03/02/1985, this song spent 20 weeks on the charts & peaked at #7. It was the last in a string of 8 straight Top 10 tunes, including that aforementioned string of 4 straight #1s. It meant nothing to me when I was a kid, but it popped up on a “suggested” playlist as I was listening to different tunes 1 evening a week ago. As I listened to it, I marveled how it was written in the 1980s … but is relevant, perhaps even more so, today….

FEATURE SONG #4:
“Blue Highway”
The proverbial you-may-not-remember-this-tune song, this single hit the airwaves 07/06/1985, spent 17 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #15, halting his string of Top 10s. Even so, it instantly became 1 of my favorites of his, not because of his lament of not seeing his loved one, but because of driving the actual blue highways. When this song debuted, Route 66 had already been decommissioned as a highway, 06/27/1985.

2 thoughts on “TURNTABLE TUESDAY”

  1. At the Grand Ole Opry session I attended last week, John Conlee was one of the hosts and he performed “In My Eye”.

  2. Oh, cool, Denny! I really like that song. It has been a while since I’ve been to the Opry, but I believe Conlee was 1 of the hosts the last time I was there, too.
