Have you seen this movie!?
What catches your spying-eye radar!?
I realize this may sound strange, but I was just introduced to this movie a few weeks ago when a friend, younger than I am, posted about watching it late night – early morning. Noticing some scenes with vintage vehicles, I decided to check it out. While I still have not seen it, it seems … interesting. ‘Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry’ is a “car chase” film (debuting in theaters 05/17/1974) based on Richard Unekis’ 1963 novel, The Chase (later renamed Pursuit). Directed by John Hough, this motion picture has a story which incorporates a phenomenon relatively new in 1963: auto manufacturers placing V8 engines in mid-sized cars (i.e. the spark of the so-called muscle car era), allowing youngsters to outrun most V6 sedans employed by local police departments.
Per Unekis’ son, Howard Hawks originally bought the rights to the book, with Steve McQueen in mind for the title role of a future film. Though he’d commissioned 3 scripts, Hawks sold the rights when he was offered $50,000 for them by Sir James Hanson & Sir Gordon White, who quickly tired of the business opportunity. Over dinner 1 evening, Hanson & White mentioned the potential project to Jimmy Boyd, who (being a race car enthusiast), wrote a script that helped raise money for the project. Later, Boyd accepted a settlement offer after a series of legal battles with James Nicholson, who then hired Hough. The actual movie screenplay was then written by Leigh Chapman & Antonio Santean. The movie was filmed in & around Stockton CA in late 1973, mostly in the walnut groves of Linden CA. The supermarket scenes (like the 1 in the above image) were filmed in Sonora CA, while the drawbridge jump was in Tracy CA, the swap meet scene in Clements CA & the climatic train crash at Stockton Terminal & Eastern Railroad in Linden (near the intersection of Ketcham Ln & Archerdale Rd). The cast includes Peter Fonda, Susan George, Adam Roarke, Vic Morrow, Kenneth Tobey, Lynn Borden, Adrianne Herman, James W Gavin & Roddy McDowall.
