CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES
5 songs from my 02/12/1996 (Monday) “CD Showcase” (12p-1p) college radio show, along with some thoughts-musings from me: John Conlee’s “She Can’t Say That Anymore”, Glen Campbell’s “Still Within The Sound Of My Voice”, Johnny Cash’s “Ring Of Fire”, Toby Keith’s “He Ain’t Worth Missing” & Barbara Mandrell’s “Love Is Thin Ice”. Also featured: train cars photographed 09/19/2016 … but do you see the rainbow!?

“She Can’t Say That Anymore”
John Conlee
[If interested in Conlee’s hits & history, check out the 07/06/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE for more.] This tune is 1 of those I loved as a kid, though I had no clue what it was actually saying. The single debuted 09/13/1980 (6 days before my birthday!) & spent 17 weeks on the country charts, 2 of those at its peak of #2. It was Conlee’s 7th straight Top 10, a streak that started with his debut release, 1978’s “Rose Colored Glasses” (#5), & included only 1 song not reaching the Top 5.

“Still Within The Sound Of My Voice”
Glen Campbell
[If interested in Campbell’s hits & history, check out the 09/24/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE for more.] Do any songs choke you up, no matter how many times you hear them or where you hear them or how you hear them? For me, this is 1 of those type of tunes! Coming near the end of Campbell’s well-known & successful career (which included several cross over smash hits), this single hit the airwaves 10/03/1987, spent 23 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #5 in early 1988. This song is 1 of a few that, at the time of its popularity, spoke to me in ways I can’t even put into words. You see, 12/27/1987, my original best friend died of an asthma attack. It was a devastating time for me, & music, including this song, was my “escape & release”.

“Ring Of Fire”
Johnny Cash
[If interested in Cash’s hits & history, check out the 07/10/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry via THIS LINK HERE for more.] Simply put, this is just a “fun song”. It originally entered circulation 06/08/1963 & spent 26 weeks on the country charts, 7 of those at #1. It crossed over & surprisingly only reached #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. But, it won Cash the Hall Of Fame Grammy award. At the time, it was Cash’s 1st chart topper since 1959’s “Don’t Take Your Guns To Town” (6 weeks, country). Since then, I’ve heard a number of renditions of this tune, but nothing like Cash’s renditions.

“He Ain’t Worth Missing”
Toby Keith
[If interested in Keith’s hits & history, check out the 07/23/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE for more.] I admit it: I’ve been known to alter lyrics to make songs I like fit or suit me better. & yes, this is 1 of those songs I altered. Originally debuting 07/03/1993 as Keith’s 2nd release, this song spent 20 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #5; it followed his 1st single, 1993’s “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” which had claimed #1 for 2 straight weeks during its run. As for my altered lyrics: “It ain’t worth keeping” … something that, ironically, has served me quite well a few times over the years!

“Love Is Thin Ice”
Barbara Mandrell
[If interested in Mandrell’s hits & history, checkout the 01/30/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry via THIS LINK HERE & the 11/30/2016 “Wednesday Wrap” entry via THIS LINK HERE for more.] You may not have heard this tune. I remember it quite well because it was on 1 of my parents’ records when I was a kid … & Mom would record records onto tapes to take in the car during family road trips. Remember records & tapes? Anyway, this was released to radio 08/14/1976, spent 12 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #24; I think it has a poignant message. While she’d had a few Top 10 tunes in the early 1970s, shortly after this single her career finally had sustained success.
