CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

4 songs from the last portion (~9p-10p) of my 02/10/1996 college radio show, shortened by the coverage of a college basketball game: Billy Dean’s “Somewhere In My Broken Heart”, Skip Ewing’s “Your Memory Wins Again”, Journey’s “Faithfully” & Southern Pacific’s “Thing About You”. Also featured: part of Thomas Lil Red Schwarz’s display (including his 2016 Eastern Grands National Champion Jr Honda trophy) at the 10th Anniversary EMS show, 10/15/2016, Ocean Gate NJ

#1
“Somewhere In My Broken Heart”
Billy Dean
This artist was previously featured in the 07/10/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry (see THIS LINK HERE) & in the 07/02/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry (see THIS LINK HERE), with both entries having more info about Dean & his career. The song featured in this “Smorgasbord Saturday” entry was his 2nd release, debuting 05/04/1991; it spent 20 weeks on the country charts, 2 of those at its peak of #3. This is 1 of those relatable-to-everyone tunes; it certainly has described different times in my life rather well.

#2
“Your Memory Wins Again”
Skip Ewing
This artist was previously featured in the 07/24/2015 “CD Showcase Memories” entry (see THIS LINK HERE), which includes info about Ewing, his career & his 4 Top 10 tunes. This song, his debut release, hit the airwaves 03/05/1988, spent 18 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #17. Frankly, I think it deserved a higher notch. While it’s not my favorite of his, like Dean’s song above, this tune has ways to reach people, whether or not they identify 100% with the storyline of the lyrics.

#3
“Faithfully”
Journey
This band was featured in the 06/18/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry (see THIS LINK HERE), which includes info about the band. As for this song
you know how certain songs remind you of certain times &/or places, no matter how often you hear them? I distinctly remember hearing this song while heading north on Highway 1 in northeast-central IL between Hoopeston & Watseka, headed towards US 24 & east to towns in Indiana! I was about halfway to Watseka when this song came on the radio, & I smiled & thought: ‘How appropriate.’ Released 04/16/1983 as the 2nd single from Journey’s album ‘Frontiers’, this power ballad peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, #24 on the Adult Contemporary chart & at #36 in Canada. Legend has it that Bryan Adams’ song “Heaven” was heavily influenced by this tune (partially because Adams opened for Journey during their 1983 Frontiers Tour) & that Prince phoned Jonathan Cain asking him (Cain) to listen to “Purple Rain”, thinking the song might be too similar to “Faithfully”
.

#4
“Thing About You”
Southern Pacific
(with Emmylou Harris)
SP was previously featured in the 06/18/2016 “CarTunes Saturday” entry, too; see THIS LINK HERE for more about the band & their tunes. Meantime, this tune, the band’s 2nd release, becomes their 1st Top 15; it debuted 08/03/1985, spent 19 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #14. & yes, I have this song on VINYL!
