FACE IN THE CROWD
created spring 1995 in college by Erika E & OC,SH’s founder Cort; further written by Cort & now adapted to publish here
NOW:
Parts written during lunch at work, Monday, 05/18/1998, & Tuesday, 05/19/1998 … collision continuation
In the collision aftermath, everyone completely forgets about the 3 missing boys: Adam, Donnie & Barry.
Jackie & Mack are safely pulled from their vehicles & rushed to Pacemaker Memorial for immediate surgery. However, it is more difficult for the responders to remove Olivia from her vehicle because Olivia is unconscious & the paramedics are unsure where all she is hurt. They finally extricate her & away from her car (2013 Nissan Altima) just as it explodes, causing further damage to all of the vehicles, further panic at the scene & (tragically) destroying the package Olivia was presumably taking to Tammy. Luckily, the explosion does not cause further injuries to anyone. Olivia is quickly rushed to Pacemaker Memorial & admitted to the ICU.
The Altima explosion causes further psychological damage to Michelle, already shaken at the accident & her recent flashback of the university explosion, which she re-lived through the Altima’s explosion. Michelle is taken to Pacemaker Memorial for observation, while Jake is also transported to Pacemaker Memorial for treatment of his cuts & bruises.
The scene at the hospital is general pandemonium, what with patients being treated & people trying to find out how they are & to see them.
In the post-accident “mess”, some rush to the hospital to be with the victims: Tammy to be there for Olivia, Matthew & Timothy to support Michelle, Julia & Erika for Jackie. Cathy tries to visit all of the victims, but particularly Michelle & Mack (since she found him in his car when he 1st arrived in town). Amy follows Jake to the hospital.
As soon as his treatment is complete, Jake (to Amy’s dislike … she thinks Jake should go home & rest) rushes back to the scene to help the police, Steve, Michael & Richie as they help clear the scene. While working, Steve continuously calls the hospital to keep updated on Jackie’s condition. Taking a moment, he calls Alicia at the jail to get word to her so she doesn’t learn the news “through the grapevine”.
When Michelle freaks about the possibility of staying at Pacemaker Memorial overnight, Timothy & Matthew promise the doctors-nurses they will take her home & take care of her that night. Once there, Matthew calls the TV station to check in, while Timothy uses his laptop to work with the newspaper employees.
Christine, who had come with Cathy to Pacemaker Memorial, suddenly realizes (in horror) the 3 boys are still missing. She momentarily panics, but regains her composure when she remembers Cathy asking her to pray. She finds Cathy to get the keys to Hope COB. Once she gets them from Cathy, she gets a cab driver to take her back to the church, where she then continues to pray & have some quiet time.
Not sure what is happening with Virginia, Desmond quickly calls a nurse after he sees Virginia waking. The nurse tries to locate Carl, but because of the accident, he is very busy & not available. So, another doctor arrives to look at Virginia. The doctor confirms Virginia seems to be recovering somewhat, but advises more tests will have to be done to confirm. Desmond opts to remain in Virginia’s room, but before he settles in for a short nap, he calls the radio station to check on things.
