NOW:
Part written during lunch at work (with tweaks at home that evening), Thursday, 05/14/1998 … the collision.

Leaving Manchester University, bound for Hope Church Of The Brethren, Michelle (in her 2000 Mercury Mountaineer) is distraught at her flashback to the bombing. Jackie (in her 2015 Buick Verano) has left the police station & is rather upset about the whole situation with Alicia still in jail; somewhat distracted by her anger, Jackie is tailgating Michelle’s Mercury. Driving in the opposite direction on the same road are Olivia (in her 2013 Nissan Altima) & Mack (in his beater 1973 Impala sedan), with Mack following Olivia. Olivia is en route to see Tammy; a mysterious package is sitting on the passenger seat of her car, a package presumably for Tammy. Mack is just “out for a drive”.

All of a sudden, Michelle thinks she sees the 3 boys walking along side the road. Without thinking, she hits the brakes. With the Mountaineer suddenly stopping in front of her car, Jackie is jolted out of her upset “trance”. Unable to slow down in time, Jackie swerves to the left to avoid rear-ending the Mountaineer; however, she pulls into the path of Olivia’s Altima. The impact of Olivia’s Altima & Jackie’s Verano, pushes the Verano off the road & into a tree. Mack is unable to stop, & his Impala slams into the back of Olivia’s Altima, knocking Olivia unconscious.

Meanwhile, Michelle freezes in her Mountaineer’s driver’s seat. She panics when she no longer sees the boys. After a few moments, she finally reaches for her phone (presumably to call 9-1-1), but she glances up to see Jake’s 1985 Ford F-150 coming down the road, seemingly not slowing down. Michelle waits for a brief moment to see what’s going to happen. Jake, rapidly closing in on the collision scene from behind Mack’s stopped Impala, is preoccupied with something in the front seat of his pickup. The stopped Impala somehow catches Jake’s eye, just in time for him to look up & swerve & hit the brakes to avoid rear-ending the Impala. Watching that unfold, Michelle drops her phone & dashes out of her SUV just before Jake’s Ford slides-plows into the front of her Mountaineer. Luckily, Jake walks away from his pickup with only a few cuts & bruises.

Meanwhile, Erika (in her 1997 Malibu) & Amy (in her 2014 Dodge Avenger), both heading to Hope COB, arrive at the collision scene from behind Michelle’s SUV. Both quickly stop to help. Erika calls 9-1-1 while Amy & Jake begin to access victims. Within minutes, the police (including Steve in his 2013 Ford Taurus Police Car), fire departments & ambulances from Pacemaker Memorial are on the scene.

As news of the collision spreads, people rush to the scene. Cathy & Christine head to the scene (in Cathy’s 2008 Saturn Aura) after Cathy learns Michelle’s SUV is involved. Matthew leaves the TV station in his 1996 Chrysler New Yorker to go help. Richie & Julia are shocked out of their afterglow warmth; they quickly dress & go to the scene in Richie’s 1979 VW Bug. Timothy freaks out when he hears his twin sister (Michelle) was in the collision; he rushes to the scene in his 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. As soon as Michael hears the news over the wires at the radio station, he heads for the scene in his 2005 GMC Yukon Denali, just after the radio station agrees to run the spot about the missing boys. Tammy debates about going, but ultimately decides to go to the scene because of Olivia; Tammy drives her 1995 Toyota Camry.

Those not going to the scene include Carl (who stays at Pacemaker Memorial to prepare for victims’ arrival), Wendleton (who listens & watches the collision reports intensely), & Desmond (who hears the news just as he glances at Virginia to see her wake up).
