“Why Do We Want”
Reba McEntire
While I’ve featured McEntire many times before (including most-recently in this entry HERE) & could feature her many weeks in a row & still not highlight all of my favorite songs of hers, this is 1 of those tunes that, as a kid, I could actually picture the scenes about which she was singing, particularly the Corvette & Rolls Royce in the 2nd verse. If this was released now, I think it might claim #1, considering how relevant it is in today’s society. This single debuted 07/30/1983, spent 18 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #7. It followed 2 chart toppers in 1982-3’s “Can’t Even Get The Blues” & 1983’s “You’re The 1st Time I’ve Thought About Leaving”.

“If The Fall Don’t Get You”
Janie Fricke
1 of the things I loved about my radio shows was playing the tunes that were popular, but not chart toppers. Like McEntire’s tune above, this song didn’t reach the Top 5; it hit the airwaves 05/12/1984, spent 17 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #8. At the time, it was 1 of 2 songs of hers in a string of 9 that failed to top the charts. That stretch started with 1982’s “Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me Baby” (#1) & ended with 1984-5’s “A Place To Fall Apart” (#1; duet with Merle Haggard). The other song to not reach #1 was 1983’s “You Don’t Know Love” (#4). The other chart toppers? 1982’s “It Ain’t Easy Bein’ Easy”, 1983’s “He’s A Heartache”, 1983’s “Tell Me A Lie”, 1984’s “Let’s Stop Talkin’ About It” & 1984’s “Your Heart’s Not In It”! Check this previous entry HERE for info & details about Fricke.
