“Tempted”
Squeeze
Released 07/10/1981 as the 2nd single from the band’s 4th album ‘East Side Story’, this song (written by Glenn Tilbrook & Chris Difford) is unique in that, despite it’s popularity, it was not a hit, failing to crack the Top 40 in any country it was released: it notched at #41 in the United Kingdom, #45 in Canada, #49 in the United States & #90 in Australia. The song is well-known due to its use in commercials (such as Burger King & Heineken), on the soundtrack of the movie ‘Reality Bites’ & in various video games. It is also unique because, unlike other songs by this band, keyboardist Paul Carrack provides lead vocals.

“Tempted”
Marty Stuart
10 years, 1 month & 1 week after Squeeze’s single was released, this song hit the airwaves 08/17/1991, spent 20 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #5. This Philadelphia MS-native singer-songwriter-guitarist had scored 2 prior Top 10s: 1990’s “Hillbilly Rock” (#8) & 1990-1’s “Little Things” (#8), after releasing 8 tunes between late 1985 & late 1989, with none of those reaching the Top 15. This song, then, sparked the best stretch of his career, with 3 more Top 10s in a row: 1991-2’s “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’” (#2, with Travis Tritt; Country Vocal Collaboration Grammy), 1992’s “Burn Me Down” (#7) & 1992’s “This One’s Gonna Hurt You” (#7, duet with Travis Tritt). Stuart released 16 more singles between mid-late 1992 & early 2004, with none reaching the Top 15. Since age 13, he toured with Lester Flatt (Flatt & Scruggs), then toured with Johnny Cash 1979-1985. He married Connie Smith 07/08/1997.
