‘Grand Prix’ is an action film, directed by John Frankenheimer, that debuted in theaters 12/21/1966.  A main draw of the movie was its unique racing cinematography, photographed in Super Panavision 70 & featuring real-life racing footage.  While most of the driving cast did not have a great ability behind the racing wheel, James Garner was very competent &, because of the film, took up racing & entering cars.  Garner’s driving was so impressive, some actual Formula 1 drivers (including Graham Hill & Jack Brabham) told Garner he could’ve been a very successful Grand Prix driver.  For the motion picture, Garner’s car was fitted with a high roll bar & no seat, since he was too tall to fit in an F1 car; the main design on Garner’s helmet took cues from then-GP driver Chris Amon (New Zealand).  Featured circuits include Circuit de Monaco, Clermont-Ferrand (France), Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Circuit Pack Zandvoort (Netherlands), Brands Hatch (United Kingdom) & Autodromo Nazionale (Italy).  Among tracks mentioned but not pictured was USA’s own Watkins Glen International.  Along with Garner, the cast includes Eva Marie Saint, Yves Montand, Toshiro Mifune, Brian Bedford, Jessica Walter, Antonio Sabato, Francoise Hardy, Adolfo Celi, Claude Dauphin, Enzo Fiermonte, Genevieve Page, Jack Watson, Donald O’Brien & Graham Hill.

  1. I just mentioned this movie yesterday and how I went to see it with friends after I broke my collarbone. Good times!
