Who doesn’t know Wayne!? A Winterset IA native, nicknamed “Duke”, he started work at local film studios upon losing his football scholarship to the University of Southern CA following a bodysurfing accident. After a bunch of small parts, his film career skyrocketed as part of John Ford’s ‘Stagecoach’. That experience sparked 142 starring roles. He died of stomach cancer, 06/11/1979. Among “missed” roles: Jimmy Ringo in ‘The Gunfighter’, lead role of 1952’s ‘High Noon’, title role of 1971’s ‘Dirty Harry’ (performed by the 22 years younger Clint Eastwood) & Waco Kid in 1974’s ‘Blazing Saddles’.
O’Hara is an Irish actress & singer who was famously red-headed & worked many times with director John Ford & actor-friend Wayne. She was highly honored, including an episode of TV’s “This Is Your Life” (03/27/1957), the 1st person to receive the American Ireland Fund Lifetime Achievement Award, the 1st woman to win the John F Kennedy Memorial Award, & named the Irish America’s Irish American Of The Year (2005), among many others. She died just over a year ago, 10/24/2015, in Boise ID of natural causes.
