Hungarian-born American Weissmuller is best known as a competitive swimmer & the actor who played Tarzan in 1930s-1940s films. 1 of the fastest swimmers of the 1920s, he won 5 Olympic gold medals for swimming & 1 bronze medal for water polo; he also won 52 US national championships & set 67 world records. After retiring from competitions, he became the 6th (& arguably best known) actor to play Edgar Rice Burrough’s Tarzan character, portraying that role in 12 movies. He & his parents traveled to the US via the SS Rotterdam, 01/14/1905 to 01/26/1905. The 3-member family visited family in Chicago IL, then settled in Windber PA before permanently moving to Chicago a few years later, where he caught the eye of swim coach William Bachrach. After swimming & movies, he became an accomplished golfer & businessman (including: Founding Chairman of the International Swimming Hall Of Fame, swimming pool company, health food stores, etc.). He died 01/20/1984 from pulmonary edema.
